I've toyed with this for a while but you've convinced me, Mark. I'm going on a concerted mission to find a Persimmon driver.

I know they on the wrong side of the water, but here's a sweet trio of drivers going cheap on eBay...

Over time, the guy in the ideal position derives an advantage, and delivering him further  advantage is not worth making the rest of the players suffer at the expense of fun, variety, and ultimately cost -- Jeff Warne, 12-08-2010

Interesting, Marco, but I'll stick with Play School for my warm and fuzzy analogy.  Golf is great (for at least one reason) because it takes us away from the need to act old, the continuous uncertainty of the new, and the fact that most of us are not outliers, but stuck in the middle, no matter how unique we think we are.  Golf is a sport we play, nothing more.

Rich, I think it's Henry Fownes. I know you get it but for others:

Architects

Old School too hard
New School too soft
Middle School jussst right.

Or

Old School too square
New School too round
Middle School jussst right.

Or

Old School too masculine
New School too feminine
Middle School jussst right.

Or--
