What a great story.  I hope Ben can play the full nine.  Inspiring to say the least.

Something to shoot for...

On Thursday, one of our club founders, Gaylord Davis, has achieved a golfing marathon that will be hard to beat.  For the second consecutive year, Gay has been walking a golf marathon for the Children's Cancer Association:

http://www.davis4kids.org/

Last year I contributed to Gay's charity; this year I am supporting one of our guys.

Teeing off at 5:00 AM, Davis played seven rounds at his Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club, the first five at Witch Hollow and the last two at Ghost Creek.  His average time per round was 1:53.  His average score was 73.  A two-time Oregon Amateur champion, I'd suggest this may be his greatest achievement as a golfer.  Always in impeccable condition, Gay Davis is about 64-65 years old.

Best of luck Monday to the 21 guys hiking at six courses: Ballyneal, Kingsley, Dormie, Dismal River, Laurel View and Lawrence CC. Play well, play fast and, most importantly, be safe.

Do reds count as not the whites?  Actually, I played a pretty consistent mix all day, mostly for pace of play sake. Primarily the blues. Whites on 1,4,8,9,16, and 17. Reds on 15 because they were the most convenient.  Tim Bert and I went out for one more 18, and after birdieing 17., I doubled 18 for a 79. I'll write something more later this week, but I'm incredibly sore right now. I will say we had tremendous support from the Kingsley staff, the charity, and the other golfers on the course.

Battling both wind and heat most of the day, I'm pleased to share that a very humble Eric Smith completed his 100 holes at dusk today.  No shortcuts.  Eric even carried his own bag for approx 36 of the 100 today.  He is too exhausted to post at the moment but the kid has pluck - he refused to give up against tough conditions.

Special thanks to Ryan Mahaffey, and his dad, for helping Eric through a very challenging day.  He passed up a day at Sand Hills tomorrow to finish for wife, kids, and cause.

CHS!

Very impressive all around.  I'm convinced it was my gross score incentive, combined with easier than usual pins, which led Bill on to such heroics.  ;D

I don't have my scores in hand but I broke 90 six of seven rounds, including a career best 84 Kingsley in the 6th round. While the number won't look as impressive on paper, I assure you that given my skill set my scores were about as much of a stretch as Bill's. The really cool thing is that Bill and I were within eye sight for the full 16.5 hours. Never more than one hole apart all day, including playing our last 36 together. Bill was on fire.

I must give a call out to my personal MVP. Kingsley's GM, Brian Conklin, personally caddied 54 holes for me throughout the course of the day. He was rock steady on the bag, had me clubbed perfectly all day, and could tell me where putts were breaking before he even walked up to line up the ball. It was the best caddie performance I have ever experienced. He kept me below 90 all three rounds and was there for me when I made par on the 100th hole of the day. I am convinced he is the only person on Earth that could get me around Pacific Dunes in less than 90 shots.

Thanks to Brian, to the entire staff at Kingsley Club, and to the volunteers that showed up from the Traverse Bay Children's Advocacy Center. We had tremendous support throughout the day!

I'm going with Pete Monaco, who had to stop four different times for lightening.  As difficult as wind, heat and hills can be, having to stop the parade and deal with the resulting stiffness from the rest is pretty damn hard.

I'm in awe of Jim Colton and the rest of the guys at Ballyneal who played more than 100 holes. I played my age (59) as scheduled and when I left Ballyneal at 3 pm my car thermometer said 106; Colton had just completed 108 at that time. The wind and heat made it feel like a blast furnace during the afternoon; fortunately the morning till about 11 was not too bad--we actually started in fog.

Props also to the Ballyneal staff, who did a great job keeping us hydrated and fed, and the caddies who were there every step of the way in those conditions.
