The Hundred Hole Hike
« on: April 30, 2012, 10:10:13 AM »
Announcing the inaugural Hundred Hole Hike!

Using the 155 holes walked by Jim Colton in 2011 as inspriation, the Hundred Hole Hike is a way for passionate golfers to give back to their communities by walking 100 holes or more in one day.  Any golfer is allowed to participate, as long as they go to  www.hundredholehike.com and sign up with the required information.  Choose your course, your number of holes as a goal, and most importantly, your charity and you're all set!

If you're not inclined to walk a 100+ golf holes in one day, then pledging to a golfer of your choice is also an option.

The website www.hundredholehike.com is up and running and a few golfers are already registered.  Stay tuned, as many committed golfers are soon to sign up and provide their charity and course.

If anyone is interested, I am still finalizing details--so you won't see me on the website yet--of supporting the Troops First Foundation.  www.troopsfirstfoundation.org   The Troops First Foundation has been instrumental in improving quality of life initiatives for the young Americans returning from protecting our nation.  As a C-17 pilot, I flew countless missions with wounded warriors aboard my jet that arrived to empty airports and an oblivious citizenry.  Troops First is an organization that understands the importance of returning with honor, of saying thank you and tirelessly supporting these young individuals that have given so much.

Awesome.  Pretty solid lineup of courses thus far!  ;)  For those who are new to the site, what Jim accomplished with last year's inaugural event was pretty inspiring.  Leveraging last year's success into something larger is a fantastic idea.  I urge everyone to get involved either as a participant, volunteer or simply by donating what you can afford to the charity/golfer of your choice.

Thanks Ben. As you alluded to, we already have 30-35 golfers interested in hiking and are in the process of lining up hike events all over the world. Many of those details will get finalized this week. Anybody interested in holding an event at your home club should reach out to me for more information.  Ideally, I'd like to get this thing big enough to call it the 100 Cause Hike!

We have some really cool things lined up with some of our golf partners, including some special edition shoes from our friend Rob Rigg and True Linkswear.

We have a potential new leader in the clubhouse:

http://www.hundredholehike.com/golfers/ben-sims

Master of the Links, Twitter phenom Howard Riefs on board, site TBD

http://www.hundredholehike.com/golfers/howard-riefs

And in a rare sign of solidarity, rumor has it Dismal River member Eric Smith will be hiking at Ballyneal. Sign of the apocalypse? Kumbaya!

Many people have expressed an interest in participating in the event, which is great to see. For full disclosure, there is a $200 entry fee to participate in the Hike (golf pros are free). This is to defer the cost of the site build, which has been a significant outlay. It's also to ensure commitment of the hikers that they will put in the hours required to train, promote their participation and add to the community and the camaraderie of the event. Many have given above and beyond to see this event come to fruition, fueled by its potential to impact many through golf.

If anybody has any further questions, I'm happy to walk them through it.

I am really excited about this event and thanks to Jim for keeping the momentum going from his day at Ballyneal next year.  I am registered and ready for a great day at Kingsley this June - what a fantastic way to spend a day and made even better by the great causes that will be supported...

Carl,

I trained starting in January last year.  My training was to watch the Wire from beginning to end while on the elliptical, probably six days a week. The last few weeks, I was more worried about my golf game than my conditioning, and spent more time at the range than the gym.

I'm a little behind where I was last year but working hard to make up for it. I didn't really know what to expect last year. Hopefully the experience will make a difference.

Jim and others have done a phenomenal amount of work to get this launched.  I'm looking forward to interfacing with the architecture at Hidden Creek from sunrise to sunset at the end of June.  With the amount of times that I will play the 4th hole redan, I'm hoping that I hit the shot called for at least once.

The Kingsley and Ballyneal guys are outnumbering us, so need to get more troops enlisted at HC.

Really looking forward to it.

Brora strikes me as a perfect course for this.  Short, relatively flat and 18 hour days.  Maybe in a future year.

Mike,

My goal would go up by 9 holes if you were to join the Hike!

The list of potential hikers keeps growing. Should be able to announce a few more events and participants today.

I'm impressed by the quality of the intro blog posts for the HHH. Case in point, a very nice job by Chris:

Bumping this to keep it up near the top of the page.

The Chicago contingent is on board at Flossmoor on June 18th.  Consider this a guarantee, the TRUE linkswear Cup will reside on the South Side of the Windy City for the remainder of the 2012 season.

Any Atlanta area golfers up for the Hike? Mike Young has graciously given us use of The Fields in LaGrange, GA, about an hour south of the city on I-85. We'd have to find a mutually agreeable date - most likely Monday June 25 or Monday June 18.

Please send me a PM if you're interested or e-mail at jim@onedivot.org.

Looks like you are up to 25 hikers at $200 a piece.  Congrats!!!  Is there any way to track how much each golfer is raising towards his charity?  With so many now to choose from I would hate to give to one while another can't even make his nut.

John, it's not quite that high as we let our sponsors and club pros participate for free. I hope the number grows from there though -- we have about 60 on the interested list, which would be a great thing. I hope we can use the surplus from the entry fees to initiate and support some grow the game initiatives or help somebody in a situation like Ben Cox was last year. I'm happy to allow our secretary, who by the way was the Chief Auditor and Chief Ethics Officer for a Fortune 500 company, give you or anybody interested an open look at every dollar coming in and out of One Divot. All of our board members are unpaid volunteers and there are no paid employees. The expenses we have to cover this year are the web development cost ($15k), trophies (cost TBD) and shirts and other gear for participants (generally at cost or less). The good news is a lot of the costs are upfront vs ongoing, so next year we should be able to run much leaner.

Jim,

My question was if we can monitor the pledges as they come in for each individual so we can give to anyone who is being overlooked.

$15,000 for your site!!!  Looks like I better send Ran a long overdue check. I had no idea how much this stuff costs.  Somebody must finally be making money off the Internet.

Good luck and thank you for you charitable heart.

John, I don't have any plans to add that functionality, otherwise that 15k might turn into 16k (which given the hours that these guys have spent building and tweaking, would still be a bargain). If somebody wants to turn up the dial on their fundraising, there should be enough ways to do that. I'm okay if my cause makes $1,000 or $100,000 -- I'm still going to play as many holes as I possibly can that day.
