Played in the fall with a guy that had a portable ipod speaker attached to his bag and he played music from his ipod during our round on the golf course.  It was a relaxed afternoon round with cocktails.  I found that I really enjoyed it.  In fact, I hit the ball really good - one of my better scores in a while. 

I know it is not for all occasions but was wondering what everyone's thoughts on this issue.   

In particular:

Judge - would you have enjoyed it on our back 9 at The Dunes.   It would not have included Franklin's preferred tracks from Metallica or Iron Maiden.  More like Coldplay, Dave Matthews, the Band, Akron's own Black Keys (my sister in law gave one of the guys piano lessons) etc...  I would have saved you from my Eminem and Black Eyed Peas tracks.

Jim Colton - considering the fine taste in music in your youtube videos (honestly, your "Somewhere Only We Know" you tube is one of the best that I have seen), I think you may really enjoy the experience if you don't already.

Eric Smith - would my wonderful ipod music selection be welcome at the 5th Major.

I always try and "fit in" with the group that I am playing in and will certainly continue to do so - just wondering what the attitude is on this issue.

I'm mostly just curious why one wouldn't use ear buds?  I've played with a few guys who did this and it seemed to work fine for them.

That would seem to be the best way for everyone to enjoy the experience as they please.

Of course. Jason Jones loves to play golf while listening to music as does my buddy Graham who is coming out to try and win his third 5th Major.

Funny story:

Out there at last year's event I'm riding with CJ during a practice round and as we round the curve coming from 3 green I hear music coming from somewhere (?) but no one else is around. It grows louder and louder and then a cart appears from down below the hill to the left of us where a group (not a part of our outing) is playing the 10th, which is in close proximity to our route to the fourth. These guys are laughing it up with an iPod dock in their cart jamming to who knows what. I asked Chris who the guys are and he tells me the guy driving is a member who Also happens to be the team Doc for the Cornhuskers! They had it all to themselves out ahead of us and Lord knows there's nobody in a fairway residence getting annoyed and calling the golf shop on them!

Mike-Although I have really no experience with what you described I would be interested in checking it out. Under the conditions you described it sounds fun and I guess the key to making it work is that everyone in the group likes the same music or at the very least has an open mind.

Our typical late Wednesday afternoon round in the summer is carts, beer, and very fast golf a/k/a Polo Golf.  All pretty low handicaps but the purpos is pure fun.  On these occassions it is not uncommon to have some music playing.  Probably not for the purist but it is more of a mid week stress reliever.  In this setting, perfectly ok...music may also break out when an emergency nine is in order.

When it's for fun I really enjoy it...if you ever play in the whisper rock invite they play it during the event in the lockerroom and grill and the range tee....it's great stuff.

As Eric stated, I'm a big fan of listening to music, loudly, while I play.  My dream is to have a golf bag with built in iPod/iPhone dock/speakers to play music as I go.  Give me a 6 pack, some music and a good nassau and you've found my happy place.

Truthfully, I don't give a damn whether anybody likes it or not.

When I play, I tend to get a song in my head that sticks there..... sometimes if I'm playing particularly well, I try to keep that particular song there as a superstition. If I'm playing lousy, then I try to think of another tune. It doesn't always work, and then I get annoyed.

Maybe I should have a walkman with me or something. Worked for Richard Zokol.

Played with music on the course for the first time last fall. It was Kiawah's River Course and I think the IPOD owner said he had 19,000 somgs. We started out with 80s classic rock and finished with funk. I really enjoyed having music on the course and I'm not a musical person.

You can still use it when you practice (and I am guessing for your casual rounds you are talking about) but I found it interesting that it is now technically illegal during a round of golf.  I know a couple people that do it quite often, it will be interesting to see if they change their practice after this new decision for 2012.

Back in the late 1920's, there are cool pics at Pine Needles (I was just looking at it) where there were twelve (12) people situated on the sand green at Hole 2 -- four (4) golfers -- four (4) caddies -- and a quartet. Thoughts? Does anyone know more about this type of arrangement?

How can you play golf and music at the same time - proving that total lack of commitment by modern players - let alone showing respect for the game.

At "My Old Kentucky Home" State Park course, they play said song with bells. Huge ultraloud bells that play it over and over all day. Course is fun enough but I pray never to see it, or hear it, again!

All that said, some light classical piano would be in order about anywhere. I am not so easily distracted to be affected by that.
