ODG Timelines
« on: March 26, 2012, 01:56:42 PM »
As part of the group involved in producing the MacKenzie Timeline I can appreciate the benefits of studying evrything MacKenzie. While researching MacKenzie, myself and others in the group have dug up some nuggets of info on other ODG's and it occurs to me that some out there might be thinking of starting a timeline for their particular ODG of interest. That so who would be interested in starting a timeline for say Colt, or Ross, or Fowler or Simpson ?

If anyone would like to nominate themselves as curator of the timeline for whatever ODG of their choosing I would be happy to forward what I have on that particular architect.

Good idea, Niall. I'm not volunteering as I'm still employed (sort of) and still play golf (sort of). But when both have abandoned me I'll sign up to do Markes. He designed one course only, Sandy Lodge.

Mark, hope you are still planning to continue your assistance to the Mac timeline I trust :-)

Niall, nice suggestion, but I doubt there will be any takers. Not all are as mad as us!

Niall,
Without using the google I'll bet there is a society for every one of the men you mentioned, and someone at each of them who might take on the task.

Niall,

I have no time for what I do now but what the heck. Sign me up. My own preference would be to take on Macdonald yet I imagine you haven't turned up as much on him and therefore I'd actually have to do some work. Although: he did spend time over there. Do you have anything on him?

Mark, I think the trick is not only to choose a one-course wonder but one who died young at that.

Mark R - happy to say I have a few bits and pieces on J Francis Markes and the early days of Sandy Lodge including some nice pics. Just give me a shout when the time comes.

Mark B - I've only the odd mention of Charlie Mac but all 20th century mentions and usually second hand stuff or about his admin duties at the USGA or R&A. I've nothing really early other than a story about Charlie playing the 18th at TOC in his student days and laying his tee shot stiff (in the days when the green was a good bit short of where it is now) and his opponent following up by holing his tee shot to win the game. Can't recall if the opponent was Young Tommy or Davie Strath but it was someone like that.

Neil - you could well be right but I suspect that there are a few unhinged folk other than just us.

Jim/Howard - I've passed on a bundle of stuff to a contact at the Tom Simpson Society but not sure what he's going to do with it. As for the others, Colt would be the other one I'd have a decent amount of info on but not much for the others.

This is a very good idea, Niall!

I'm happy to work with you, Mark B and ANy Other in trying to fill in the extensive gaps in CBM's resume (CV).  Do we have any sources other than himself to elaborate on or even verify his years at St. Andrews (1872-1875).  I seem to remember one reference that he didn't actually graduate from the place (maybe he never claimed that?).  Similarly, what exactly did he do from 1875 until designing the first Chicago GC in 1892?  How did he keep his swing in good enough shape over that period to win the 1st (or was it the 2nd) US Amateur?  Etc. Etc.

Being over here I'd be happy to help out in any and all research into his St. Andrews days as well as the various purported later trips to the UK to study great golf holes.  Maybe David Moriarty/Tom MacWood can muster all their abilities to examine ship manifests to see whether or not CMB actually crossed the Atlantic in the earrly 1900's.  If so, you, I and others can then help sniff out where and when he visited places like North Berwick and Brancaster.

As to his also checkered history in the USA from ~1900 to his death, maybe dispassionate researchers such as Tom Paul and Wayne Morrison could be enlisted to the cause?

Looking forward to hearing from you and maybe getting together again for a game or two this year.

I've always wondered whether someone should write a book (or found a society) on Donald Harradine. I've played about a dozen of his courses and there are some outstanding gems among them.

Now there's an idea. Good luck in recruiting the two Tom's, David and Wayne to the cause !

I'll email you re a game. If I recall rightly FBD was organising the Braids, did I miss that outing ?

Ulrich

I don't know of Donald Harradine, what courses did he design and do you have any pics ?

Niall,

I would say Donald Harradine was as important to the development of golf architecture in continental Europe as Donald Ross was for the USA. Here's some info on him:

Not that I'm volunteering beyond my Mac work, but here a couple of things I quickly found re CBM on Ancestry.com, and there are more there. I'm sure the excellent Mr George Bahto has his own timeline working away in the background.

CBM ca1900

CBM trip from Liverpool back to the US on the Luisitania in 1909.

CBM comes back from Bermuda - presumably related to Mid-Island - in 1928.

Neil, excellent work as always. Clearly you have a talent for Macs!

My plan is to try to use technology for timeline collation and to create an open enterprise. Specifically, I am trying to create an online form for entries and connect that to a database. After an evening's work, though, this is as far as I've gotten:

www.cbmacdonald.com

 :'(

Anybody know their way around HTML, PHP, my SQL, and phpFormGenerator v2.09?  ???

Looks good Mark!

Definitely will limit my involvement to architects starting with Mac! And the Mac timeline was produced on a Mac  :D

As for the stuff on the bottom of your last post, I haven't the faintest idea :o

Hi Ulrich

I'll be playing a Harradine course (Golf Club de Nimes Campagne) in a tournament in a couple of weeks.  For your timeline, he designed the course with Leonard Morandi and it opened 6 June 1970.  If I find out anything more on my trip I'll let you know.  Glad to see I'll be playing a track with some pedigree!

Cheers

Hope the site is a bit undulated, Harradine was at his best on severe sites.
