  Was the third overrated?

Anthony,

What leads you to ask that question ?

Why would you think the 3rd hole is overrated ?

[

I don't think it's a good example of an Alps.

What "Alps" holes have  you played ?

Lets face it. The third is a poor example of an Alps. It's an insult to the original. The bunkers in the landing area are hideous . You gain nothing with a layup and what the hell do you aim at? A guy sticking his arm out. Just wish it wasn't called the alps.

Anthony - if the hole wasn't named Alps, what would your opinion of it be??

Brian-The last two before the clubhouse shots which I think are of 18 green are really good. You are right as Eric looks like a kid that just stole a candy bar from the corner store.

Thanks Steve and Brian.

I love how the native grass contrasts with the fairway. The holes are framed so beautifully.

Certainly a bucket list course.

Lets face it. The third is a poor example of an Alps.

How so ?

The HUGE hill fronting the green provides an excellent representation of the "Alps"

It's an insult to the original.

Many, if not most, think it's vastly better than the original.
Would you cite the yardage and clubs usually played into both greens ?
Would you compare the putting surfaces of both greens ?

The bunkers in the landing area are hideous.

In what way ?

Isn't the demand presented by the diagonal bunker, along with the other bunkers, a vast improvement over the demand, or lack of demand on the tee shot on the 17th at Prestwick ?

You gain nothing with a layup and what the hell do you aim at?

What do you gain with a layup at # 17 at Prestwick ?
What do you aim at at # 17 at Prestwick ?

Have you ever played Prestwick ?
If so, how many times ?
How many times have you played NGLA ?

A guy sticking his arm out.

Obviously, you missed the triangular marker.

Just wish it wasn't called the alps.

What would you call it, in light of the physical properties and topography of the hole ?

Why do you suppose CBM called it an "alps"

Why have you failed to answer the question regarding the identification of the "Alps" holes have you played ?

As representations go the links between 17 Prestwick and 3 NGLA are weak other than a blind second shot. I dont really understand the NGLA tee shot strategy as other than in sand you have a shot at the green. I havent seen the hole going up the fairway to lay up before playing towards the green. That said both are very good golf holes.

Mark,

Quote
I don't really understand the NGLA tee shot strategy

There is a small saucer up the RHS from which you have the best combination of flat lie, angle to the green and view of the green. It rewards you well for successfully challenging the narrow point of the fairway about 240m (265 yards) from the plates.

For the shorter hitter, it's necessary to challenge the greatest possible carry over the diagonal bunker for an easier lay-up, either to the right or to the top of the hill.

Pic below of the saucer I reference:

Scott,

I suspect that many have never observed the right side saucer bunker you pointed out.

Many are so absorbed with their play, their game, that they only see what confronts them, and not what confronts the broad spectrum of golfers who play the hole/course.

Anthony Gray,

Would you reply to the questions I posed.

Thanks

One question at a time Pat. I understand your passion foe NGLA. I was underwhelmed. I've played it one time. The lobster was terrific. The land for the third hole is just not good land for golf. I like my alps to be straight on. The emphasis should be on the second shot. By putting bunkers in nthe fairway  it takes away driving it as far as you can to shorten the second shot. Doesn't make since from a strategic standpoint. Contradicts the original. The three tombstones trump a caddy for aiming.

Steve,

You have burst my bubble. Until you obviously weaseled your way onto American golf's Gothic shrine, I was the only Armenian ever allowed on the hallowed grounds. Now, I shall be forced to endure the indignity of sharing the podium with a newbie.

I see you took a photo of the sacred statue, so you must have snuck into the library during lunch. On my maiden voyage through the gates, my host was a little put off by his marginally disturbed guest talking to a bronze likeness of Macdonald; but when I carried on a conversation with Findlay Douglas and Judge O'Brien's paintings it was decided to put Timmonds on my bag under the theory that we could both talk to our imaginary friends.

It is straight on

The emphasis should be on the second shot.

It is

By putting bunkers in nthe fairway  it takes away driving it as far as you can to shorten the second shot.

There are NO bunkers in the fairway, with the exception of the FAR RIGHT BUNKER SCOTT PICTURED., which is not the bunker you were referring to.
I suspect that you didn't observe the architecture as thoroughly as possible.
As far as driving it as far as possible, you can do that if you challenge the right side of the diagonal bunker.
You have almost unlimited driving distance up the right side.
The fairway has to be 100 yards wide.
The "ALPS", or the hill that creates the "alps" is the impediment to driving it as far as possible, not the bunkers IN THAT HILL
And, if you drive it right, you can drive it as far as possible, leaving you a shorter distance into the green.

You have far MORE OPTIONS ON THE DRIVE AT NGLA THAN YOU DO AT PRESTWICK

Doesn't make since from a strategic standpoint.

It makes perfect sense, you have far more options.
What driving options do you have at # 17 at Prestwick ?

Contradicts the original.

How ?

The three tombstones trump a caddy for aiming.

Obviously you NEVER OBSERVED THE DIRECTIONAL OR AIMING MARKERS AT NGLA.

As I indicated earlier, I think that you may have been so absorbed in your game that you missed almost everything else

HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED PRESTWICK ?

How many times ?

Pat. The tombstone aiming markers have to win that battle. The layup is much better at Prestwick because it is a layup. The fairway at The National curves around the hill. A dune beats a hill hands down. Why don't you like the original?
