I saw a couple of other negative comments about Poppy Ridge on the other thread and didn't want to threadjack. I was just at Poppy Ridge a couple of days ago. I've always said the course is the epitome of "OK". Every hole you stand on the tee and say, "Yeah, this is OK." It seems like it could have been much better, but it's relatively enjoyable I think.

What's the basis of the negativity? Or what are others' thoughts on it?

I mean how bad can this be?

Matt, You're right, it's only bad IF you believe variety is the spice of life. Or. if you value the golfer's right to choose his own path to the hole. Other than that, it's just a repetitive slog, and not representative of what a quality organization  the NCGA really is.

What it does highlight, is how even a quality org can have absolutely no clue to how important the gca is.

I don't remember much from my one visit other than thinking it wasn't worth it to drive out from the city (not exaclty a ringing endorsement). I do remember liking the windy locale and mostly that the holes all seemed to play downhill. So, even though the green to tee distance wasn't far, it was often up a steep hill. And I get really bored playing downhill all the time.

Well, yeah. It's not the most hugely strategic place in the world. And things tend to blend together a bit.

I stopped playing out there several years ago mostly because of poor conditions and poor maintenance. Also that area can get very windy. I never really had a problem with the layout or gca.

To add to the above, it is a difficult walk, particularly due to the green to tee distances.  I forget which hole and which nine, but one green to tee distance in particular is a trek.  There are many like it.

I think the longest green to tee walk is on Chardonnay, between two of the holes in the middle of that nine. As someone else noted above, many of the tee boxes are elevated and sit on top of the ridge lines, which frequently requires a hike from a green up to the next tee. PR would be a good place to have a cart able to hold 4 golf bags. That way guys could walk most of the way around the course without having to haul their bags from green to tee.

I agree 100%. The course was an easy walk except the climbs from green to tee. On a few I got a ride with a playing partner, which helped to speed things up. But, that feature significantly hindered what otherwise would have been a nice walk. Walkers frequently used steps for those treks which would hinder the use of a pull cart, but if your bag was on a cart, it'd be a fine walk.
