Lake Jovita North (Kurt Sandness): a photo tour
« on: March 11, 2012, 02:18:19 PM »
I know very little about the architect Kurt Sandness.  I believe he has done only 3 courses total:

http://sandness.com/Golf/index.html

His 'latest' course is the North course at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, a gated community near Dade City, Florida.  The North course opened in 2005, while the first layout (the South Course) opened in 2000.  The South Course lists Tom Lehman as a co-architect.

For central Florida, there is a surprising amount of elevation change.

The routing:

#1.  A relatively simply par 5.

Tee view:

2nd shot view:

Approach shot view for those that have played it as a 3-shot hole:

From over the green:

#2.  Fairly long par 3.

#3.  Par 4, the No 1 stroke hole.

Tee view:

Approach shot view:

From short of the green:

From just over the green:

#4.  Downhill par 3.

#5.  Shortish par 4.  I like this hole, where bombers might try to drive the green if you take a line over the tree.

Tee view:

A shorter and left tee shot may have this tree to negotiate:

A 3-wood off the tee can leave this slightly downhill approach shot:

From the just over the green:

#6.  Another fairly easy par 5.

Tee view:

Second shot view:

From over the green:

#7.  Par 4.

The pond cannot be seen off the tee left, but it is reachable:

Unfortunately I pulled my drive left and had to take a drop from the hazard:

Approach shot view:

From over the green:

#8.  Par 4.

Tee shot view:

An approach shot view (better tee ball farther left):

From short of the green where errant shots right will tumble way far away:

A very large green, this look from the back of it:

#9.  Slight dogleg right par 4.

From the back tee you really need a draw off the tee:

White tee view:

Approach shot view:

From left of the green:

Back nine tomorrow.

Well, here goes the back nine.

#10.  Par 5.  Mr. Sandness sure likes to have lone trees in play!

Tee view:

Second shot view:

Approach shot view:

From just over the green (this green was struggling a bit in the back, while the rest were wonderful):

Walking up to the next tee is where I had a wonderful meeting a family of sandhill cranes:

#11.  Par 4

Tee view:

Approach shot view:

From just over the green:

#12.  Par 4.

Tee view:

Approach shot view:

From left the green:

#13.  Par 3.

Tee view:

From just over the green:

#14.  Par 4.

Tee shot view:

Approach shot view:

From just short of the green:

#15.  Par 5.

A blind tee shot:

2nd shot view:

From just short of the green:

#16.  Par 4.

Tee view:

Approach shot view:

From left the green:

#17.  Par 3.

Tee view:

From left of the green:

#18.  Par 4.  Pretty solid finisher.

Tee view:

Approach view:

From just over the green:

After one trip around the North course I'm confident I like it more than the more highly acclaimed South course which I've played about 5 times now.  I'll see if I can cobble together some photos I have taken over the years of the Sandness/Lehman South course.

BTW, the accommodations at LJ are just outstanding.  Large, fancy villas and reasonably priced.  World Woods is 1h away, and I believe Streamsong will be just a little over 1h away.

Thanks Joe, that is good information for next fall. I wonder if the poster known as "Sarge" agrees with the North vs South comparison?

Sarge?

I like the South better, but North is a fine course. They are pretty close. North has more holes with housing on both sides, and the yards have no landscaping. It's more of a visual preference.

13 North is a beautiful par 3, and 14 N is a great heroic hole usually into the wind. 3N is a great hole but has houses on both sides that take away from it

Sarge,

I agree.   The South is my preference as well.   Better terrain and doesn't have the "Florida feel" that the North does.

Joe, with regard to the drive to Streamsong, likely about an hour and a half drive.
