If anyone cares to join myself and Jon Wigget in a game at Old Moray next Thursday morning I would be pleased to host. Looking to tee off before 10am.

Boys,

Wish I could be there and join you. I'm quite fond of the only place I've ever played where I feared a lob wedge could take out a Harrier Jet!!

Love the finishing hole there as well........as strong as anywhere, on either side of the pond!

I had the pleasure of playing host to David Tepper and his good lady last year. I warned David to bring some ear plugs because of the noise which he duly did and would you believe the first time we saw a plane was as we sat down in the clubhouse after the round. I played there this morning and not a single fly by.

Can't say I particularly miss them but they do add something to the round when they are in full flow.

Niall - I played the Old Course ten years ago on a buddy trip. We played on a Sunday (I think) and there were no planes flying that day. It was a fantastic course and experience. The finish was magnificent, especially teeing off on 18 just under the restaurants where the locals were having their Sunday brunch!!!

Are the planes no longer there? Did the airbase close? I'm hoping to visit there again in late August, perhaps we can get together for a game.

We will most definitely need to have a game if not two. Email with the details of when you're over and I'll see if we can get a GCA posse together.

The planes are still here. Its just your luck if they're flying that day. I suspect that they don't fly much at the weekends (don't know as I generally play evening during the week). There is talk of the new Euro fighter being stationed at Lossiemouth and its apparently bigger and noiser than the Tornados that are currently stationed here, which is a frightening thought.

I so hope this will happen!

Here is a photo from my visit in 2002... I look pretty good for being 51!!!

And, a photo of my travel mate teeing off on #18. As I remember it, there were some restaurant patrons just above our heads. Does that sound correct?

Re the 18th, the pub/restaurant/hotel is actually on the right just above the landing area for your drive. Having said that there is a new block of apartments overlooking the 18th tee and its possible that 10 years ago that a restaurant used to be there, not sure.

When are you thinking of coming over ? Anything booked ?

Niall,

Enjoy Lossie! My late father-in-law, who was a keen golfer, rated it very highly. I've yet to get over that way when I've been up in the Highlands to play it, but hope to get there next year if possible.

Cheers,

Niall,

I'll be in Scotland from August 18 through the beginning of the Buda. No itinerary... just making things up as I go!

Doesn't sound like a bad idea. Give me a shout nearer the time and we'll get something organised. Moray New is worth a play although frankly its a bit of a missed opportunity. I don't think it would take much mind you to make it a much better course.

If you (or anyone else reading this) are going to be about after Buda there is an event called the Scottish Whisky Trail 5 Course stableford comp or something like that. Basically starting on the 10th through to the 14th September you play, in order, Boat of Garten, Granton on Spey, Moray Old, Forres and Elgin. The cost of the comp is £70 plus your accommodation. I can thoroughly recommend all those courses although Moray Old and Elgin are the only two that would test your handicap if that were your thing.

Kirs

Ditto above. Give me a shout and I'd be happy to host.

Looks like its a two ball. Suggest an 8.30 tee-off if that suits. If not text. I'll be at the course before then.

Cheers

Well we had an excellent time. Light breeze and sunshine. Course was in good condintion on the whole and I really enjoyed playing it. Got round in a little over 3 hours and there was almost nobody else on the course.

Popped into Castle Stuart on the way back to see Chris Haspell. Course looked in very good nick. They were putting a few new bunkers on the 5th and 14th to spice the tee shots up.

Thanks for the invite Niall

My pleasure, really enjoyed it.

Interesting stuff on Castle Stuart, particularly after the discussion we had on it. Almost like golf course design has gone full circle in that there back to putting th ebunkers in afterwards  ;)
