Which came first the town or the course?
Did the course have to compromise because of the town?
Does the town being there before the course add anything to the course?

      Or

Have we got some of the best courses in the world located by a town?

I believe St. George's Hill, in Surrey southwest of London, was one of the first suburban courses to be associated with and promoted via a housing development, albeit a very upmarket one.

Same with Huntercombe, but Willie Park was financially hurt when the lots didn't sell.   There are still very few homes around the course.

A good start but plenty more to add.  Elie, Muirfield, North Berwick, Royal Liverpool, Silloth and Worplesdon off the top of head all have adjoining housing.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
