With Riviera, LACC, Bel-Air, Sherwood and Wilshire Los Angeles is a Mecca for world class private golf. The LA Open has a rich history. Watching the coverage again today, I'm dumbstruck by the measly galleries. Is this an embarrassment or what?

Terry,

I've played all but Wilshire and wouldn't consider the group of courses you listed as "world class".  Good ?  Yes, but not "world class"

Pat, just curious, I, too, have played all the courses but Wilshire.  If LACC and Riviera are not world class, what does it take to be world class?
Tommy,

So it's your position that Bel Air, LA South and Sherwood are "WORLD CLASS" ?

Not sure how you got that.  I do think that LA north and Riviera are world class.

Steve, I agree on that part as well. The NY fans knows sports as well as any. Well except for network people of course. no one knows less than them. lol I was thinking of how there are no fans that will yell during a swing, make more noise etc like the NY golf fans. Clearly the NY area has the best golf in America.

Tiger,

You are spot on as far the network people go. They could screw up a wet dream if left alone in their high-rises.

As for lack of courtesy and decorum, the crowds at Winged Foot remained vastly different than those that spectated at Bethpage. Now if Philly only had a public course worthy of an Open, you'd be describing NY fans as Tibetan Monks! :-X :-X

Threads and comments about Los Angeles always remind me of the way Philadelphians bitch about New York.

I generally can't stand professional golf.  What a bore.   But while I couldn't make it this year, I do like to to try and attend at least one day of the tournament at Riviera because it is a great course and a great place to walk around and watch the pros hit golf shots, at least before the weekend. Once one manages to get there (not an easy task for those who don't live nearby or know the westside) everything is accessible, the course is unbelievable, and the viewing is terrific.

As for the "worst fans" comments, to me Riviera on a Thursday or Friday is a perfect venue precisely because it isn't over crammed with spectators, and I wouldn't be there otherwise.  I guess by your standards that makes me a horrible fan, but then I admitted that going in.  I'd certainly not trade it for what one might find at Scottsdale, Bethpage, or at many other venues with supposedly great fans.

This is hard but I do agree that parking and traffic plays a part in viewing golf at Riv.  I hope the Walker Cup doesn't have a problem.  There does seem to be a problem in LA considering the Rams and Raiders both moved.  The Dodgers seem to draw well when they are winning yet the stadium is empty if they are losing.

This all strikes me as reasonable. When I said "worst fans" I suppose I was referring to those who stayed away. It's still a disappointment to me.

Tommy, I got that because Terry named the courses comprising his L.A. Group and those other courses were amongst them.

Why would you only single out two of the five or so Terry named ?

Terry indicated that perhaps he waxed too euphorically about the GROUP.

So, again I have to ask, do you think that Bel Air, Sherwood and LA South are "World Class" ?

Although it may not be true of the small sample size that is this group (GCA), I can assure you that, given the opportunity, about 99.8% of the general golfing public would consider those courses to be "world class."

Terry,
No, I would not say that either Sherwood or Bel Air are world class.  They are very good but not jump on the airplane and fly across the country to play them good.  I have not played LA South or Wishire.

With the possible exception of something like the Ryder Cup, golf has to be one of the worst spectator sports ever. The playing field is so huge that you can be assured that 95% of the action will not be anywhere near you. If you're a golf nut like many of us on here, the best events to attend are low level match play events at special courses - it gives you an opportunity to walk the course practically by yourself, if desired.

I beg to differ...in all other sports the closer you sit the higher the price (thus the more you have the more you get).  Outside of special hospitality tents and a few grandstands, everyone can sit "court-side" at a tour event.  I'd much rather spend an entire day standing right outside the ropes (which you can find a spot to do so at any tour event) watching the best play the game that I love then go sit in the nosebleeds at any sporting venue (well...except a game at the Big House...that would be a draw).  Also for the price of admission I can go early, watch them warm up (which is as entertaining as them actually playing), follow an entire 18 hole round, and still stick around and watch more golf.

Never let the quality of your game determine the quality of your time spent playing it.

I saw more inappropriate behavior in one afternoon at Riviera (ringing cellphones, taking photos, etc.) than I did in eight days at the AT&T at Aronimink.

Joel,

I know this discussion group isn't big on "facts" but what you wrote isn't true at all.  The Dodgers have played 50 seasons in Dodger Stadium and have led the league in attendance 25 of those seasons, were second in attendance 12 times and third 8 times.  In the 5 years in which they were out of the top 3 in attendance they finished 4th, 4th, 5th, 7th and last year when they had a fan almost get beaten to death and an owner declare bankruptcy and basically give up running the franchise they finished 6th out of 16 teams in the National League.  They haven't had that many losing seasons since coming to Los Angeles but they have led the league in attendance four times while compiling losing records.

Both the Rams and Raiders moves had nothing to do with attendance it was completely about the City of Los Angeles and the City of Anaheim not building new stadiums for the owners.

Being a NorCal Californian, as much as it pains me to say this...

..I too think the "LA has poor fans" thing is a myth.

They still have two NBA teams,  two NHL hockey teams, and two MLB teams.  And they would support football too...non-attendance is indeed not why they left.

P.S.  Just because a person is not in the parking lot 3 hours before the game for tailgate and not rowdy during game time, doesn't make them poor fans...its just means they have a life otherwise and it doesn't revolve around living vicariously thru professional athletes!  ;)
