Riviera is Marzolous
« on: February 16, 2012, 07:01:01 PM »
It appears that the renovated 8th hole at Riviera has found its time and place. A true option hole.

I missed the changes on 5. How are they working?

One other shining star is the fairway bunker on 7. Congratulations are in order.

I love how that fairway bunker on 7 slopes.  It's the finest of its kind, anywhere.

I saw the back of 5 green had a chipping area that extended into the teeing ground on 6 tee. It also looked like a lot of trees and brush have been removed on the right of 6. Riv looked fantastic

Riviera is so so good.  The par 3s are so good.  The setting is as unique as there is in golf.  I can only imagine if some of those tree were cut down for vistas.  Its golf as good as it gets!

Tony,

They also shaved the bank behind 6 green going up to 7 tee.  It was interesting to see a couple of the pro's fooling around with some shots back there during the pro am.  And you're right, Riv does look fantastic!

How was the 8th their idea?

How is the 10th hole better with the fancy bunker edges?

8 is a beast now at 460 yards. Wasn't the old hole a pretty easy drive and pitch?

Riviera is always fun to look at on a bleak winter afternoon here in New England.  Is George Thomas the most underrated of the Classic Era
designers?  Did he just not produce enough work to be more highly regarded?

Thomas really didn't know or accomplish much.  It has taken the Fazio design firm to turn Riviera into a better course.

As for number 8, I can't print what Michelson says about it.  Something like "it is a ,,,,,,king disaster."

John if you were hoping to get a rise from me, you succeeded.  I don't have the time and interest to get into what they did on #5, 6th tee, back of #1, front right of #9 green, back and right of 3 green, left back of 13 green and the bunker edges everywhere.

It must be kept in mind that the elusive charm of the game suffers as soon as any successful method of standardization is allowed to creep in.  A golf course should never pretend to be, nor is intended to be, an infallible tribunal.

Not looking for drama, I was thrilled to see so many players taking the left option on eight. I have not played Riviera since the trees were removed from the barranca.

John,

Would it be fair to say that you have praised every Fazio related change made at Riviera?   And you've praised each iteration of this new 8th, have you not?  If the not-so-old work was so favorable, then why do they keep changing things?

Honestly, is there anything they could do to the course that would give you pause?

While I haven't seen the course in person, the new 8th hole looks much better than the narrow tree-lined old 8th to me.

I'm curious what the problems/issues are with the new split fairway.  The latest aerial looks like it has a sandy waste area running thru the middle of the two fairways.  That same "sand river" was used to superb effect at Wine Valley, but perhaps at Riv it doesn't really work?

Just wonderin'

I'm headed to Riviera for Sunday's final round--my first visit there. Is there anything in particular I should look for/at? I definitely want to see #10, sounds like #8 is notorious and the 18th green amphiteatre is cool. Anything else? Are there any particularly good viewing areas besides @ 18 green? Thanks.

The old narrow tree-lined 8th?  To which iteration do you refer, exactly?

The split fairway has been around for quite a while now. I guess you could call this latest version the new, new split fairway version, and Barney really seems to like this new, new version.   But then as I recall he really liked the previous "new" version as well.  This leaves me wondering, if the previous new version was so good, then how could this new, new version be so much better?  Is this an example of Riviera improving on perfection?  Or is his standard rather lax?

Walk the entire course. It's just great. A lot of great holes. A very easy course to walk since all but two holes are pretty flat. The cognoscenti will properly take issue with the various changes to number 8 and the vanilla looking bunker edges, but the bones of the place are rock solid. And Tiger isn't playing so nobody will get in your way.

I agree with Terry, make sure you walk the entire property...just amazing.  I particularly enjoyed standing at 6 green, near 7 tee, to watch the shots and putts on 6 as well as the difficult tee shot on 7.  6 is so much cooler in person than it is on teevee.

The 8th and 10th and 13th greens are in a small area, all fun to watch green side.

The Bogey tree near 12 green is a must see.

If you get a chance try to get a look at the approach to 18 from the right side of the fairway. It is hard to believe how much you need to fade the ball to hit the green.

David M,

I only know the course from after the renovations. I love the course more than I should, sorry.
