Gearhart Golf Links getting update

Lets hope the plan of Tim Boyle (Columbia sportswear CEO) the new owner of this course helps it become even better.

I know who will make all the gear in the shop. I like their golf shirts but they snag on EVERYTHING.

The OGA visited Gearhart Golf Links Tuesday and Wednesday for the Women's Stroke Play and Men's Super-Senior (65+). Wind was down, variable less than 10mph. The women's champ was even and the super-senior champ was +4, even at 6000 yds. I'm guessing that greens stimping at 12 rather than their usual 8-9 had a great deal to do with scoring.

I played, finishing in the lower half, and was impressed with the changes. The 4th green area was regarded and a new green built, much better than the old one set in a narrow fold. 6, 14 and 15 have a new look. 6 is now a dogleg right,
14 has had it's green moved left and elevated in a newly formed bench in the long dune. Bunkering is much improved, both in quality, quantity and positioning. As a result, even with the greens at grade, small and circular, the placement of the drive is influenced by bunkering. There is a number of high fescue areas that impede the bomb and gougers.
The 18th is still a strong finisher.

It is definitely a links course, but the summer coloring wasn't apparent.  Author's note: When I was in my 20s, the course was watered on tees, greens and the #1 fairway, and I was disappointed when I was above the mid 70s. That is no longer the case.

If you are on the north Oregon coast, stop by for a enjoyable round. They also have a good hotel and McMenamin's has the diining covered.

I have to disagree about it being a links. The soil just doesn't do it. I played it last November and it plays soggier than my home course in the Portland Metro area. Absolutely no roll out on tee shots. Ball often barely makes it out of its pitch mark.

I am sure it is very linksy in the summer, but I was disappointed in rainy season conditions.

Thanks for shouting. Pretty sure it meets the definition and pretty sure it has nearly the same soil structure as Astoria.
Just because the owner has a different maintenance theory, which may use more water than you prefer, doesn't eliminate it from links status. I have played the course nearly a hundred time, mostly in the 1970s and 1980s. Except for the greens, tees and the first fairway, it was NEVER watered. If you had encountered it then, maybe you opinion would be different.

Pete,

I am not shouting. I am dismayed at the website often putting posts up in a font so small that it cannot be read. The only recourse I have found is to select the misdisplayed text and make it a big font. Why the website screwed up my first paragraph and not the second is a mystery to me. Why the website used to work so well, but no longer does is a mystery to me.

I doubt very much that Gearhart was watering their course last November. That would be a colossal waste of resources. I have played Astoria in October on a couple of occasions, and saw no soggy turf conditions like at Gearhart in November. It seems to me that the soil at Gearhart is much more of a loam than the more sandy soil at Astoria. Tee shots at Bandon don't make huge (or any at all) pitch marks in January like they did at Gearhart last November. Therefore, in my opinion, Gearhart cannot be classified as a links.

Sean,

I am not the only one that experiences these website problems.

This weekend I played both Astoria G&CC and Gearhart GL.  About a 20 mph wind at Astoria from the NW tending twds, heavy overcast, upper 50s.. Gearhart was a 1/2 club wind from the N, light overcast, then sunny, low 60s.

Despite the different conditions, I think that Gearhart is now slightly better than Astoria. Better bunkers and better positioned bunkers at Gearhart, with heavy beach sand. Unless you are a strong player, positioning is much more important at Gearhart. Greens pretty much equal. Both courses had recoverable high fescue grass, but at Astoria that was on the hillsides. Conditioning was pretty equal, by flighting the ball low I was able to pick up about 20/30 extra yards of roll.

Gearhart's stone tees at about 6550  72.0/136 is a stout test, especially 11-13 and 18. The only negative I perceived was over-contouring in the 9th fairway at the 150 marker, but the much better play is right of the fairway to semi avoid the fronting bunker.

Along with Bandon Crossing it is the best value on the Oregon Coast. It may not crack the top 10 public in Oregon, but it is close. John Strawn has done a good job on the upgrades.

Gearhart is a gem. The new ownership has really done an excellent job restoring what was neglected for decades. If you find yourself within a 100 miles, definitely seek it out.

I've been looking at overseas life memberships for awhile and recently got the green light from the wife.  This ties into the thread because I noticed last week that membership at Carne provides membership at Gearhart as well.

Not sure what the membership at Gearhart actually means or if it's more like a reciprocal.

Gearhart's take is at the end of this 'about us' https://www.gearhartgolflinks.com/about-us/   Honorary memberships at both ends.

Memories, not money, at root of Gearhart Golf Links' reclamation

When Oregon's oldest golf course fell upon desolate and desperate times, Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle stepped in to transform the course into a cult classic

11-14 and 18 are strongest. After and easy opening the pond on 5 is an attraction.  Summer prevailing wind is from the NNW. Bunker sand is usually firm and probably native or trucked from the beach, I usually use pitching wedge to avoid bounce problems, but that's just me.

Any other GCAers?

We play it every year in March for a caddie tournament.  The course will probably be a bit more firm in September, meaning staying below the hole will be a good idea.

One practice round should be all you need to get the gist of the place.  For a shorter course, it can play really long from the "Stones."

You can bail out to the right almost everywhere out there, especially on 2, 5, 13, 14 and 18.  You'll definitely want to stay right on your second shot on 18 to make sure you don't get blocked out on the approach.

Say hi to Jason for me.
