Shouldn't we be hearing something today about the Committee's pick?

Just looked at those poll results. My guess is Player.

EDIT: sorry, brain fart I meant Thomson, the lowest vote getter in the results.

Per Twitter, the committee is reportedly deadlocked....and the vote must be unanimous.

Geoff Shackelford Looking less and less likely we'll get news on the Rio 2016 course architect today. Committee reportedly deadlocked. Has to be unanimous.

Here's one of them.

Gotta go.

It has to ne unanimous?  Wow, could spell trouble.

One stubborn committee member can simply insist his pick wins.  Or, one person could "veto" the other 3.  Given the proposition and timeline, the strongest opinion may win.  I hope they all are working together as one person can simply run out the clock until the others agree.  Can't be much fun for the candidates.

Even the Pope doesn't require unanimous vote.

Hope we hear some of the stories after the result.

I did quietly wonder why they would have an even number of judges....and not go one more with 5.

But I guess its making sense now!

Any inside scoop on who the presumably 2 candidates are that they are haggling over?  Still gotta believe Jack and Annika is one of them.

That's the best news out of this whole story. It implies they will take their time going over the designs. Lets hope they can conceptualize, well.

Maybe.  But also gives more time for back room lobbying and the angst of waiting by the candidates.

So Gil Hanse is the possible "shocker?"

Is it possible the team picked can be a "shocker" when we already know all 8 of the teams involved?

I would hope they have the courtesy to notify the two still in the hunt as well as the six that did not make the cut. Common sense says they would do that. Making all of them wait for another month to get any news may qualify as cruel and unusual punishment.

Also gives them time to arrange a co-architect arrangement ala Sebonack.

Don - I doubt they tell anyone they are out.  Sometimes if 2 are part of the deadlock, a 3rd party becomes the consensus pick.

I also agree that some of those firms are more qualified than others, although we might disagree on the criteria.  I am not all that familiar with Hawtree or Thompson's/Ross Perret work, for example, and I doubt you are either.

Since I haven't read every single post or topic on the subject, has it the RFP Scope of Project been publicly stated?

Do we know what the criteria the committee is looking for?

Maybe its just me, but a month doesn't seem unreasonable....they just heard thier presentations.

With the amount of money being spent, it seems totally feasible that they would want to stew/sleep on it for at least a few weeks.

Hell, I know guys who take much longer than a month when deciding on a new car to buy!

I don't think a lot of money will be spent. The decision probably comes to down to who is willing to assume the largest portion of the risk for the least amount of money.

I mean, seriously: the finalists are all established firms. It's probably not a process of finding out who can design a good golf course.

Jud,

When asked if it's Player, Geoff says "Not that ridiculous, but not good" at least the way I read it.  Lonegan then guesses Norman and there is no response (yet) from Geoff.

If Geoff's info somehow comes from cryptic clues from Gil, it might indicate that the committee had given some indications which teams were in or out, no?  Of course, he may very well have other sources, since Gil is sworn to secrecy.

Mike,

I read some of them, but as I also posted, its quite possible that a wowser presentation "clarified" what the committee thought it needed for them.

In any event, it looks like it might be a "Cinderalla story" in the making!

Kalen,

It is not unusal for these committees to realize they need more time.  I recall Laredo and waiting to hear back.  It is excruiating.  I also recall El Paso and sitting in the airport bar with Forrest waiting for the flight home when word quickly came via an official phone call that Faz got that job.  Hey, I just got word a few days ago of a commission that I had submitted for in November, with a almost as secretive process.   I emailed to say I presumed they had gone another direction, and they emailed back saying they had tabled it, and then the next day, they emailed to say I had the job.  Go figure!  It happens all ways.

A small committee can tend to deadlock on such an important decision.  My guess is that six firms will open up the whiskey tonight and two won't have any fingernails left by tomorrow morning, if not sooner.

Actually, noted on the other thread that the official word is only that the announcement won't be made until later.  We don't know what Geoff Shack's sources are on the deadlock, and they don't actually say that.

It would not be uncommon to not make an announcement until a final contract is signed.  The thinking would be that they don't know for sure that an architect can live up to whatever they promise in a presentation until they get it in writing, either.  And, as mentioned, the IOC will be there in March, making a lot of sense for the announcement.

Great, even more time wasters looking for leaks.

Not too surprised by the news. Announcing that the winner would be revealed in two days seemed wildly optimistic, especially with an even-numbered jury. A compromise candidate could very well emerge from a deadlocked situation.

Gotta wonder about that "not good" comment. As noted above, more time wasting ahead as the new deadline allows for plenty of conjecture.

I interviewed Antony Scanlon a few months ago for LINKS. I don't know if this is still in the cards, but at the time he told me the plan was to test-drive the new course with both men's and women's pro events a full year before the Games. I mention this as a way of saying that Rio doesn't really have the luxury of burning through months just in the selection process. They need to get cracking.

my prediction of Hawtree a few months ago is getting better and better. ;)   In all seriousness, given today's news, I think the chances of an American winning the job is ~0.01%

There's no Putney Swope option this time. Nobody involved among the eight has any idea what is going on and who is favored and who is not. Anyone who tells you otherwise is lying or just speculating. And there's an awful lot of speculation among the remaining principles.

All I know is that such delays, standard with golf and with the Olympics, do not bode well for finishing on time.
