I have been waiting for this! What would happen to the Open? even though it is referred as the British Open - if Scotland got independence would the R&A stick to courses in Scotland only? or would it remain in the reshaped Great Britain? I would be interested in Melvyn's comment.

I was at the University of Dundee for 3 year and I have a soft spot for Scotland and have walked past Alex Salmond and never liked the guy even though he is quite an asute politican fighting for his beliefs but I believe he would take Scotland in the wrong direction.

It is The Open Golf Championship ... "British Open" is not the real name.

Why would the R & A abandon courses in England [or possibly Northern Ireland] from the rota just because Scotland became independent?  There are a fair number of English members in the R & A, too.  For that matter, I'm not sure there is anything in their bylaws which insists that the Open be played in Britain ... it's just their tradition.

Ben - In theory the Open Championship could be played anywhere the R & A say. Perhaps in the future it might go to Dubai. I suspect if Scotland gains independence the rota as it is will be pretty much as is.

Ben,

Tom pointed this out in an earlier post. When you spent three years in Dundee did you ever hear or read that it was the British Open?

If Trump gets his way on wind farms with Salmond, it'll be a moot point.
and it will have a permanant home in Scotland.

Bill,
I think Salmond promised that there will be a referendum to see if
Independence is genuinely desired. I gather, here in the Antipodes, that the Welsh and English arevery much in favour of the idea that if Scotland is stupid enough to want independence then so be it and cut them loose'

It would detract from 'The Open' and put more world wide attention on the on-going series of ultimate rival matches between Scroughts Woods Club chaired by Sir Richard Gussett (Undle Dickie) and the MacGregor clan, in their quest to retain the prized trophy, the petrified middle digit relic of St Andrew, so well covered by David Feherty:

Nothing would happen to The Open. Scotland would still be within the R&A's jurisdiction.

NI is technically not part of Great Britain either, although it is part of the United Kingdom.

What part of England is Scotland in????

Don't think this is a likely political outcome.

I doubt anything would happen to the Open Championship but:

something could happen to the Royaland ancient. If Scotland gains independance but keep a commonwealth status, the Queen remains the leader of country (Like Canada and Australia for example)... probable scenario.
Queen Elizabeth is mixed blood of past Queen and King of England and of Scotland.

But if it turn in a republic and the Monarchy is kick out of the pictures, than the Royal name in Royal and Ancient, might have to go. least probable scenario.

Being fron Quebec and Canada, I'm pretty much aware of those independance and affiliation to the Queen mouvements. Speaking of which, it always fascinates me that new courses in QUebec are called Royal Something, even though they haven't been autorized officially to do so and that the Queen is a contested figure in Quebec

I'm fairly certain that Royal patronage has no boundaries. If Scotland were to become independent and leave the Commonwealth then I don't think much will change in that respect. Same with the Open. A more interesting question is what is the chance of Scotland voting for independence ? Not very likely is my take on it and I say that with no real hardline view on whether I would vote for it or not.

It will come down to the money in peoples pockets and I'm not sure that Salmond can guarantee that Scots would be any better off.

If it only comes down to money in people's pocket, independance is not significant..

Quebec has more arguments for independance than Scotland.

The Quebec movement for independance:
- At first it was a matter or culture and identity
- Then it became a matter of economic
- Now, it's just a joke...(due to the current leadership (or lack of) the sovereignist mouvement

Philippe:

I had always assumed that Royal Montreal had official sanction to call itself that.  No?

Royal Melbourne is still Royal Melbourne long after Australia became independent.  I suspect it would be the same for the R & A.

If Scotland became independent, I presume it would remain in the Commonwealth.

The Amateur Championship was held at Portmarnock in 1949, although Ireland had been independent since 1922, and was no longer part of the UK. This is the only time it has been held outside the UK. Perhaps the reason was that Ireland was a member of the Commonwealth until April 1949. I guess the same might apply to the Open.

Philippe:

The royal in the name Royal Dublin still remains, many years after independence.

Tom, when did Australia 'become independent'? We are a constitutional monarchy with QEII (the Queen of Australia) as our head of state.
I do wonder what will happen when Australia becomes a republic (which will happen eventually, but we're probably at least ten years away from another vote), I can't see some of our Royal clubs being thrilled at having to drop the name!

Are you serious?
If so, latest news:

Had to laugh when I read the article. Mr. Salmon should maybe choose his comparisons a little more carefully. Until 2008 he was touting Iceland as the perfect economic model for Scotland and now he thinks Scotland's armed forces would be perfect if they were the same size as Kuwait's :o If he looked at recent history he might have noticed that Kuwait was conquered by its bigger neighbour for being a 'renegade district' in need of repatriation. Hell, Scotland has even got Oil just like Kuwait ;D

As for the 'Open' I don't think there would be any change. Also, its already been to Northern Ireland.

See my post above. I doubt your Royal clubs will have to change their names, could be wrong on that, but don't think so.

I'm guessing Quebec (and Royal Montreal) would no longer have jurisdiction to host the Canadian Open in that case?

The Open winner was formally regarded as the Champion Golf Player of Great Britain as the invitations were open to all the clubs in Scotland & England.
Article dated 20.10.1860

As for what will happen, let’s see if Scotland is mad enough to seek massive debts that will take forever to dispose of just so some little greed man and his friends can have power.  If Scotland ever was the poor relation in the Union, then times have changes as our citizen’s get far more per man that any in England.

Independence means Scotland will have to pay for itself, that will be a rude awaking for many a Scot who has for generations supported Labour seeking as many free hand outs as possible. Full Independence will see the taxes in Scotland going through the roof all so we can keep the SNP in the manner they dream of being kept in. Any Government who is willing to join the Euro while it’s on its death bed as a currency should never be given any form of power and certainly not the key to the doors.

As for our Monarchy, our current Queen and dynasty sits on the throne thanks to the link to The Scottish Stuarts.

I pray that the SNP never get a majority vote as I believe full independence will rip Scotland to bits perhaps persuading the English to again rebuild Hadrian’s Wall to keep the poor Northern tribes out of their prosperous country.

I love Scotland but not as an SNP debt ridden country.

My guess would be that there are very few of our overseas brethren - apart from those few ex-pats - who would even begin to understand the historical relationship of Scotland to England and the other countries in this United Kingdom. Hell, I barely even grasp it myself!
What is undeniable is the movement towards 'scottishness' which seems to be occuring. I won't comment on the rights or wrongs about it but it IS happening.
Maybe the Union has run its course? It's only been a couple of hundred years after all. It was only an economic partnership in the first place anyway.
Re the £. We've been printing our own money since before the Union and can legally continue to do so. Be a bit like the US$ and say the Bermudan$ or whatever.
I will say that I find Wee Eck to be one of the most odious men I have ever seen and won't be voting for independence as long as he fancies himself as King Eck the 1st.
