Different things in different places:
In Brazil, I was looking for a course that was just in decent condition
In Japan, India and Singapore, one that was easy to get onto
In Ireland and Scotland, links golf
In England, classics
In various Caribbean Islands, decent courses with ocean views
In Mexico and China, value compared to quality
In Malaysia, decent pace of play
In Thailand and Vietnam, the most fun course available
In Continental Europe, decent weather and good conditions
In South Africa, caddies that keep me from dying :)

And, when I finally get to Australia for the first time 6 weeks from now, all time classics that I've wanted to play.

From my time in Ireland, I can say unequivocally that what most American golfers were looking for was ...

Cold beer !

Four different times that I've been in Ireland, I have heard groups of Americans grumble LOUDLY about the beer not being cold.

As for a real answer to the question, I'm sad to say that I think many Americans are really looking for America when they travel abroad. It's sad how few Americans are comfortable adapting to another culture and trying to fit in.

That's true Tom and it is a shame.  I've been lucky enough to play in 26 countries and fitting in/going with the locals was the best part.  One of the most fun rounds I've had was playing in a weekly money game in a men's group in Kuala Lumpur at Bukit Jalil.  Not a great course by any means but I made new friends for life and have been back to play in it a couple of times since.  I've had a blast just going to courses and playing as a single all over the world.  Almost universally great company.

I've always looked for a wife. And I've been as good at that as I am at golf.

I once played County Sligo with two lesbian French woman. The one was smokin hot and the other was, let's just say she was not.

I tried for 18 holes to get the one to consider adopting a "different culture" but to no avail!!

My partner (golf partner !) cancelled on me at the last minute so I went alone and played 80% with Europeans and locals in Ireland and 20% Americans. One of my favorite all-time golf trips.

Didn't you learn anything on the cushy streets of suburban Philly?  You should have played your way to a ticket to the show.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I want something unique, if I want to something that reminds me of home then I will stay home and save money. I want what I can't get here.

The reason I took my first overseas golf trip over twenty years ago was due to access.  I'd watch a lot of golf on TV and wanted to play the tournament courses.  Since I had absolutely no way of getting on any private clubs, I went to the UK to play the courses of the Open rotation.   I liked links golf and I continued to go back and play more and more courses.

The one course I wanted to play the most was my first experience at links golf.  It remains my favorite golf course: Muirfield.  I have been fortunate to have played it about 20 times.  Just a fantastic experience.

One more vote for "something different" than what's available here in the US....and I'd like to add this is one of the funniest threads I've ever read on the site.  All the beer consumed during today's football has the GCA crew in rare form.  Tim, you had me at "Quality drain stoppers"!

I love to travel and play golf. I go on business much of the time and travel alone.  I have had the opportunity to play with Sean Arble and Mark Rowlinson in England and Wales.  I have made friends in places from El Salvador, to Slovakia, and Madagascar.  I look meet the locals, eat the local foods, see the sights, and try to understand the customs and culture. It broadens my understanding of the human condition.  I am lucky to have friends around the world and feel the richer for it.  It makes me a better person.

Unequivocally,a different experience. So, that means links golf in Ireland and Scotland. In addition, it is access to great golf courses.  In those countries you get to play some of the world's best, because they are accessible to everyone.  Lastly, and I can't believe someone hasn't already mentioned it - the 3.5 hour round!

In terms of golf, the same things I look for whenever I play.  I am looking for quality good value golf in pleasant if not beautiful surroundings and a bit of ambience which sets a place apart.  I know it when I experience it.

Michael and Brian,

From your post you obviously associate Scotland with links golf. Michael, you also said that you wanted to play something different to what you play at home. Have either of you played any inland golf in Scotland and if so how different/similar to what you play back home ?

Tom

I don't think its just (some) Americans that look for home comforts while abroad, I think you see in other nationalities too. Worse than not fitting in wioth the locals is expecting them to put up with your boorish behaviour which seems to be what a large element of UK package holiday makers expect.

On reflection I've only ever encountered US citizens once playing golf. In this particular case they had arrived early on a Sunday morning and rented clubs etc from the Pro shop, but the shop was out of Titleist Balls.

I was just passing by on the way to the Tee, when they came up to me in a desperate state and asked if I had any Titleist Balls to sell.
In the end, as a gesture of bonhomie to our american cousins, I gave them a couple I had in my bag - as I really didn't care if I played with Pinnacle or Titleist.

There are a number of high profile courses in Ireland and Scotland built to appeal to the American market either as visitors or members. There have undoubtedly been some fine courses built and high standards within the facilities. What I do not understand is the charm of playing GB&I golf isn't just the quality of the courses but the charm of old clubhouses, often with worn leather chairs, winners boards going back into the 1800s and displays of fine silver trophies many of which had been competed for on many occasions before the game took off in the USA. You cannot recreate these special atmospheres with a bunch of cash. What also makes our great clubs special is the fact they are usually bustling with members, guests and visitors and not hosting ten four balls on a long summers day.

The overseas visitors have helped to drive standards and facilities but no one visited a top club because of the showers or more importantly didn't visit because of the locker room or lack of shoe shine boy.
