I kept hearing people--including golf pundits, especially--skewering Every for his lack of media savvy. These are the same folks who, every time Tiger Woods gives an interview, complain that TW never gives any insightful or particularly honest-sounding answers. So here's Matt Every, who gives perhaps the most honest interview I've seen by a golfer, and they try to obliterate him for it.
Why? Because protecting the "image" of the Tour as being full of perfect angels and immaculate paragons of morality is more important than allowing the personality of an interesting player to come through, which, of course, would actually help the Tour become more compelling. They don't seem to want to get out of their own way.
Finally, I think people are burying the lede here. The widespread interpretation is that Every's essential shoulder-shrugging "Meh." as an answer to Tilghman's asking if he's "changed" since his suspension shows that he's dumb or bad. In reality, I think, he was making a political statement that many people of my generation would agree with--that marijuana is not that big a deal and should be legal or decriminalized. I personally do not hold that view but Every is entitled to his opinion. In my opinion, the reaction to his expression of that view has been as indelicate as his response to a line of questioning abruptly initiated by Tilghman that was, at the very least, tacky.
