Skylarks soaring over the links.
Magpies clacking in the trees.
Swallows dipping low on the fairway.
Oystercatchers waddling.
Autumnal Crows.

In the Philadelphia area I notice a Red Tailed Hawk on almost every course I play with a few Herons sprinked about.  And Cape May, NJ in the spring is world renowned for its annual migratory bird population.

Just a few days ago I was playing Sand Barrens in Swainton, NJ and got super close to a bald eagle.  Wow, they are so big, they dwarf pretty much all birds in the Delaware Valley.

The real test of a bird lover - putting on greens covered in fresh goose crap.

On a more positive note, there are some pretty good-sized golden eagles in the trees just south of Colorado Golf Club. Magnificent birds.

That used to be the case on a couple of lagoon-side greens at Sharp Park, but it was coot crap instead of goose crap.

We have two families of ospreys (sea hawks) living high in pine trees at Pensacola Country Club.   Beautiful birds.  We also have a colony of least terns who come here to mate and hunt for fish by dive bombing our lakes.  We also have egrets and pelicans.  On the 18th green, directly on the bay, we'll get pelicans hovering right over the green.

What I enjoyed most at Osprey Point in Kiawah was watching several ospreys doing their thing.  There is a golf club in Canada that should go unnamed (they seem to prefer avoiding gwakers like me) which has a bald eagle nest (actually two, but I think one was abandoned in favor of a larger one higher up) just a few feet from its front door.  When I was visiting, I heard a screech right above me as I was walking in, and though I looked for quite awhile from various angles, I wasn't able to spot the eagle.  Bones and fur on the ground around the huge conifer and occasional calls were evidence of their activity, but the cub declined comment.

We have a bunch of migratory ducks in Texas right now.  Buffelheads are my current favorites, though Lesser Scaups are cool as well as plentiful.  Mallards are a dime-a-dozen and year-round, as are Canada geese, those most vile creatures along with various cormorants.  We also see hawks, herons, and egrets galore; doves, martins, cardinals, blue jays, mockingbirds, and all types of blackbirds as well.  Great birding in Texas.  Wish we had pheasants and quail.

Just a few days ago I was playing the North course at Lake Jovita and came upon a pair of sandhill cranes and their very recent little additions to the family.  And you get a gold star if you knew that baby sandhill cranes are known as colts.

Move the little blue slider bar to the right to see the colts.

The real test of a bird lover.... how about coots/mudhens?

I've noticed courses that have problems w/ coots often have stagnant nast manmade ponds.  A few weeks ago I played a course that had a real problem with coots.  Watching carts drive was a sight...crap flying everywhere.

The first time I saw a road runner was out at Rustic...I expected them to be larger (about the size of a coyote?) but they were still interesting.
