I like birds.

Skylarks soaring over the links.
Magpies clacking in the trees.
Swallows dipping low on the fairway.
Oystercatchers waddling.
Autumnal Crows.
Hoopoes at Penina.

Birds/Golf.
Inseparable.

Still gotta see a Red Cardinal.

Marty,

I still step back in wonder at the kookaburras laughing, sulphur crested cockatoos screeching, rainbow lorikeets whistling and butcher birds exclaiming here on Australian courses.
And that is just at my drives!

Cheers Colin

I loved those little orange-beaked oystercatchers who lived in the rock wall at David Tepper's flat in Dornoch.  I'd post a photo but am on my iPad.

Marty:

When I saw a Scotsman's name in front of this post, I expected something different ...

But, I agree with you.  I've seen some amazing birds on our projects over the years:  the barn swallows at High Pointe, the gannets at Cape Kidnappers, or the crazy kookaburra who used to sit on my back porch in Tasmania and wake me up in the morning while we were building Barnbougle.

My favorite bird story was about one of Bill McBride's oystercatchers.  My first time at Machrihanish, I was playing way over my head -- out in even par, birdied the tenth [no pun intended].  On #12, I was in the left rough, contemplating going for the green in two and making an eagle [no pun intended], when as I looked up this bird came diving right at me!  It shook me up for a minute; then as I was getting ready to swing, it came after me a second time, and I put the club up to defend myself.  I played quickly to get out of the area, messed up the hole, and got out of my Zone.

When I got back to the pro shop, I went to buy a souvenir in the pro shop, and on the club's sweater was the same bird that had attacked me -- an oystercatcher.  I told the pro my story, and he said I was probably close to the bird's nesting area out in the rough, so she was just defending her young.  She also defended par quite admirably.

The Kites at Huntercombe.

Martin I saw a Hoopoe at Chiberta, looked like it has escaped from Disney’s Tiki room.
In my travels I’ve noticed that Larks seem to favour the East Coast.   A course with Larks gets an extra star in my guide book.

Skylark
Have you anything to say to me
Won't you tell me where my love can be
Is there a meadow in the mist
Where someone's waiting to be kissed

Oh skylark
Have you seen a valley green with spring
Where my heart can go a-journeying
Over the shadows and the rain
To a blossom-covered lane

And in your lonely flight
Haven't you heard the music in the night
Wonderful music
Faint as a will o' the wisp
Crazy as a loon
Sad as a gypsy serenading the moon

Oh skylark
I don't know if you can find these things
But my heart is riding on your wings
So if you see them anywhere
Won't you lead me there
Oh skylark
Won't you lead me there

Hoagy Carmichael.

Fine post but trust Doak to bring architecture back into the thread. Birds as a hazard indeed !

As an aside, I do prefer club logo's that have a bird in them, Machrihanish being a great example.

My only notable bird story is a sad one.

I was playing at Moffet Field and there was a flock of birds camped out just in front of one of the tee boxes, some kind of geese or something.  Anyhow, I topped my tee shotl and it struck one of these buggers square in the head.  It squealed and flopped around for about 30 seconds before it finally gave up the ghost.

Still feel bad about it to this day.  :'(

Reminds me of a game I played several years ago with some friends at Morpeth Golf Club in Northumberland.  One of us (a hunting, shooting and fishing type) hit his drive at the par 4 15th and it landed flush on a rabbit lieing in the right semi.  When we got to it the animal was still around but obviously distressed and badly hurt.  Simon, whose clients (he's another lawyer) are mostly farmers and large estate owners, knew exactly what to do and put it out of its misery with a sand wedge.  He was completely matter of fact about it but the other three of us were much less sanguine.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

FBD,

One of the main reasons I’ve always enjoyed a quick few holes on my own first thing in the morning or last thing at night, is the opportunity to see some interesting wildlife, especially birds. I’m certainly no twitcher, those guys are mental, more a Bad Birdwatcher, a phrase coined by Simon Barnes in his excellent book of the same name.

Anyway, I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been standing over a putt and instead of thinking about holing I’ve been thinking “ooo, that sounds like a buzzard overhead!”

I’ve seen plenty of birds on courses, from the everyday tits (no sniggering at the back there!), blackbirds and swallows to greater spotted and green woodpeckers, skylarks, jays, mistle thrush, sparrowhawks, pegrine falcons, buzzards. There is also a great sand martin colony in an old quarry at Notts GC similar to the sand bank at Castle Stuart. But my favourite sightings have been a kestrel and an osprey:

A kestrel sitting in a small silver birch at Notts GC. Never seen one sitting in a tree before so close, but it was a really windy day and this kestrel had its eye on something. When they hover their heads stay perfectly still watching its prey as their wings and body move around. This kestrel was in a tree being buffeted by the wind so the branch and therefore its body was all over the place, but the head stayed perfectly still, as did I watching it, until the guys up on the green had to call me to run and catch up.

An osprey flying over Spey Valley golf club, complete with its prey. The fish was being held head facing forward to be more streamlined. Spectacular. Unfortunately I didn’t see a thing the next year when I played Boat of Garten, as it was too late in the year and chucking it down anyway!

And not to rub it in FBD, but I did see red cardinals when on holiday in Virginia. Beautiful!  8)

Niall,

A good point about birds on logos. A few of my favourite club logos featuring birds are:

Green woodpecker at New Zealand

Arctic tern for Brora
You do see terns on the course, but they are more prominent on the beach. On many occasions when I’ve walked along the beach have I been dive bombed by the turns if I’m in the vicinity of their nest.

Red kite at Huntercombe
My understanding is that they are now so prominent in the area that the club changed their logo to this beautiful bird. I remember playing the second hole there and a kite was flying around at almost head height oblivious to us golfers. They really are massive and magnificent raptors!

Cheers,

James

You will find numerous red tail hawks on the courses in San Francisco. There are usually one or two soaring or hovering above the driving range at the Presidio. The range faces into the wind coming off the ocean and the steep downhill slope in front of the practice tee creates a perfect updraft for the hawks to get airborne. They are large birds.

I was really sorry the professional's shop at New Zealand was closed, I was planning to buy a sweater with that cool logo.

We have two families of ospreys (sea hawks) living high in pine trees at Pensacola Country Club.   Beautiful birds.  We also have a colony of least terns who come here to mate and hunt for fish by dive bombing our lakes.  We also have egrets and pelicans.  On the 18th green, directly on the bay, we'll get pelicans hovering right over the green.

I'm always amazed at the variety of beautiful birds we get here on the northern Orange County border in SoCal.  We've just had
another visit from about 40 pelicans... they are magnificent to say the least.  But the blue herons always fascinate me.  They are
so regal and even when they seem asleep, they sit on the bank of one of our lakes and are so catlike in catching fish.  We also get
egrets, hawks, geese, buzzards, cormorants and more....

The best bird story I ever heard involves the one with the black swan at Trump in Palm Beach ... but I'm a little hazy on the
details.  Maybe someone can chime in here...  I think  a member was attacked by the swan who killed it in
self defense,  but then Trump kicked him out of the club anyway.

Given the number of seagulls who inhabit the driving range I go to, I'm surprised it doesn't happen more often.

Meanwhlie at Reddish Vale we have a pair of cormorants, much to the chagrin of the anglers who try to fish half a mile down the river. Cormorants eat a LOT of fish!

Every May the bluebirds arrive at our course for a brief stay.  It is one of true highlights of the year.  We have a sizable red tail hawk population that always keeps things exciting.  Watching a hawk on a food run is pretty inspiring.  This past year we were lucky to have owls nest off one our greens.  The size of a baby owl's head is quite remarkable.  The sounds of the woodpeckers going about their daily labors is always enjoyable.  One of the many vitues of walking early in the morning.

When Wilmslow Golf Club moved to its present site in 1903 members were dismayed to find that many golf balls were stolen by crows. So bad was the problem that a crow stealing a ball became the club emblem, and is even used on the 150 yard markers.

A few years ago at Engineers, my buddy smokes a drive off the 18th tee and nails a bird mid-flight down the fairway.  We all think it's a hawk of some sort and race out to the scene as quickly as possible.  Our caddy beats us and raises a sigh of relief...."Don't worry guys!  It's just a seagull.  I've already called the grounds crew, they're bring out a shovel to put it out of it's misery".

We went from calling a vet to bludgeoning the "rat of the air" in about 3 nanoseconds.

Our course has built 50 or so blue bird boxes. They are beautiful birds and we have them in abundance in the summer.

Last summer we kept seeing a young hawk walking around in the rough. We thought it might be sick or wounded and contacted the county raptor center. They told us that it was probably one of several chicks that they had just released. They told us that many never learn to hunt and that the mortality rate for chicks is about 80%.

A couple of guys on the maintenance crew began catching fish and leaving them on the ground next to a lake. Minutes later the hawk would swoop down and devour them. This went on for about a month until one day the hawk disappeared. I hope he/she has survived.

In the Philadelphia area I notice a Red Tailed Hawk on almost every course I play with a few Herons sprinked about.  And Cape May, NJ in the spring is world renowned for its annual migratory bird population.
