I saw a picture from the thread on "Good site for golf" and some lines in the landscape started talking.
I don't know if it's right but have a look of the pictures and tell me what do you think, expect in the holly land.

Reclaiming the land from the sea and a new 1st Green allowed the current layout of the first Hole. This was interlinked with the modification of the Green for the 17th Hole. I have some details filed away, will seek them out, or look to Scott's book on the Evolution of TOC.
