It's great news that we will see Portrush holding the event... And fingers crossed that the numbers turn up and the course and town can hold them giving the R&A something to really think about...

I was hoping that this may have heralded a turn to links golf by The European Tour but the announcement of Carton House for 2013 put a stop to that...

If The Open returns to RPGC, will the R&A leave the course alone?   Perhaps Troon hasn't been changed at their request (I can't recall) but the rest on the rota have been altered.  So what are the odds?

Interesting, Signore Paulo. Not knowing RPGC at all, I have no idea what the evil Empire might bring to bear.

Let's hope with two bombs found since Thursday including an attempt to murder a soldier the R&A ask for security.

What baffles me is why it is being held there? I presume proximity to Dublin or that it is attached to a 5 star hotel? It isn't the golf course, nor could it be the ability to draw crowds with record numbers showing up at Killarney last year.

If they are going to hold it at an inland venue, I can't see any other venue touching Killarney. The scenery is great, the players love it, the fans love it, the hotels are as good as it gets in Ireland and there are enough of them to easily cope with crowds etc.

I think it was the ability to draw a bigger sponsor by taking it back to Dublin... Not really sure the logic in that though Brian...

Some of the players talked out against Killarney but I think that might have been part of the posturing for Portrush....

Interestingly, Carton House are upgrading the O'Meara course and weren't being drawn on which course 2013 would be held on... The cynic in me thinks that's just marketing to show they have 36 holes of equal quality though...

Personally I hope that trumps new place gets the open permanently.  Most of the open rota was not intended to be played by guys that hit it 350 and with balls that will stop from almost anywhere on almost any surface.  He has built a course which may suite the modern pro better, so lets leave the classics untouched for the rest of us.
