Championship Course?
« on: December 26, 2011, 09:23:48 PM »
So what exactly is a 'championship course'?

i ask this question as i was looking at places to go on a golfing trip and nearly every course you look at sells its course by saying it has 1,2,3 or 4 championship courses or over 30 championship courses in the region.

i am curious as to what people think this means and why it is so commonly used? is this something that architects are asked when they get a contract to build a course and what does it mean to them.

Mark - To my mind it is on that has played a proper championship on. Each persons definition of the level of championship would be different I suspect. There is no exact definition and some determine championship course by length.

It's a course with 18 holes, most of which aren't par-3s.

It's used so commonly, IMO, because ... there's no better word to describe, for marketing purposes, a course with 18 holes, most of which aren't par-3s.

It's drivel, of course, most times.

Like most marketing.

This is a poor definition. You know it when you play it. You feel it at Muirfield. You feel it at Olympic. You feel it at Shinny. you feel it at Royal St Georges. They all have a certain bigness, or sense of scale that feel large. It is not so much the length of the holes at all. I guess the comment earlier says it for me. You know it when you are there.  It sure as hell is not because they call it one or the architect puts his signature or something on it.

any description of a course using this term has been written by the local chamber of commerce and not by a golfer.  it means any course not a par three or "executive" course.  Useless to choosing a golf trip.
