My brother went to Sewanee in the mid-60's and loved that course.   I suspect it was because he would rather have been doing anything other than study.    I visited about 20 years and found a fairly run down nine holer with a nice routing.  Will it still be nine holes?

I jumped on this thread as soon as I saw it thinking it was a discussion of the most memorable round folks from GCA have played with you Tommy, but was bitterly disappointed to find out it wasn't.

BTW in my case I would nominate the round at Diamond Creek about 3 or 4 summers ago.

  I think 2 of the 8 founders of the Kintyre Club in 1876 were churchmen. The 14th hole, Castlehill, is still named in honor of  one of them. The Reverend George Strange was minister of the church of that name in Campbeltown.

Anthony’s remarks are backed up on here long ago by the sadly missed Alfie Ward.  He said the once a town got a railway in Scotland the Minister was often among the local’s who organised a golf course.

 Since Quakers have no clergy this topic puts us at a disadvantage. But Rolling Green was started by Quakers who wanted to get away from the country club atmosphere at Springhaven. I happen to be a Quaker myself and studied in high school to be a Catholic priest. I think my attitudes toward golf course architecture are affected by this experience. Quakers espouse simplicity and that certainly appeals to me in courses.
