Two fairly old courses in the Philly area:

1.  Lebanon CC (Findlay).

2.  North Hills CC (Meehan, et al).

When you are in the area visiting a biggie, I would put one of these two on the docket.

1--Kinloch (in New Zealand, not Richmond)

I agree.  The course has its faults but was a lot more interesting than I was expecting.  I wonder how long it will be around though because it has changed hands a few times and when I was there there were no more than 20 golfers on the property on a nice Saturday in summer.

Hope Valley.  I've played over 80 Ross courses at this point and this one really impressed me, which is saying something!

Aside from the ones I mentioned in the earlier thread, Lester George's CC of Florida must be mentioned.

Good call, Mark.

I'll go with St. Georges, though I also had a really fun day at Seawane.

1. Rivermont - hadn't really heard about it except on GCA, so went in thinking "Is it really as good as some GCAers say?"  It's even better...and also seems like a great , low key club to me a member at...kudos to Chris C

2. Mountain Ridge - this one I had heard more about, but I went there thinking "Okay, its probably another good Ross"...but it is really, really good Ross course...I think the greens there are in my Top 10 of most challenging greens that I've ever played...in a beautiful setting as well and the club has terrific food!  thanks to Patrick M for my day there

I'd LOVE to be a member at either place

Paul, Rivermont was my biggest surprise of 2010.  It really is THAT GOOD!

For 2011 I would have to say Tallgrass.  It could be outstanding if it was kept firmer.

Also, Shinnecock Hills.
I was fortunate enough to get to walk it in July, and it was far better than I expected (and that is saying something given its reputation).

The restoration of Los Angeles CC really impressed me.   It raises the bar for doing high quality restorations.  I would have to rank it as one of the great restorations in American golf course history.

Pinehurst #2. Visually, it's as good as everyone expected; but it's just so much more fun to play.

David,

The new owner of Kinloch has a history of doing well out of developments that have not succeeded.  Fingers crossed he can do well here.

Big Island CC on the Big Island, Hawaii.  I was not expecting much at all of this Dye course.  It had the obligatory island green but the course was a joy to play.  It was fun, strategic, and beautiful.  After playing Hualalai and wanting to throw up, this was a pleasant surprise.

Yale - This place blew me away, I knew it was highly rated but the scale yet intimacy of the routing really made it stay in my head all year, plus I became a big fan of Mac/Raynor Greens this year.

Cassique - a course I would like to play again and again (just need to save up), not a single weak hole or any way over the top holes.

Lebanon CC - Hidden Gem of 2011 for me.

Good to see quite a few mentions for Yale.

If I had named another course alongside Peninsula (North), it would have been Yale.

It's packed with great holes, 7-15 is fantastic shot after fantastic shot and -- maybe more crucially for beard-pullers than for others -- its templates are a great set with quality examples of the Alps, Biarritz, Eden, Knoll, Double Plateau.

Some of the non-template holes -- 2, 7, 8, 10 -- are highlights up against those great templates, showing there was much more to Raynor than building other people's holes.

Fallen Oak - I did not expect much other than cool looking bunkers.  The terrain is more interesting than I expected and the course is very good

Kinloch - I knew it was highly regarded but the information I saw on the course made me puzzled as to why.  It appeared to me as just another well maintained modern course.  I found it a much more interesting and engaging test than I expected despite miserable weather and horrible play.

Plus our caddie was money at Fallen Oak.

I had several this year.

Pine Dunes, I really think it might be the best course in Texas, it's better than Whispering Pines.

Old American, I don't know if it's business model will make it long term but it's a really good golf course, also the kind of course that I don't know if the average golfer will really understand.

Glen Mills, quirk, quirk, and more quirk.

Trump National, if it wasn't Trump it would get lots of love.

Pensacola Country Club, I know that Bill was an integral part in getting the course back and they did a great job.

Kiva Dunes, best public course on the Gulf Coast?

Money Hill, really cool golf course.

Year of domestic travel.

Hamilton Golf Club, St Andrews, NZ

Suprisingly good land, good variation of holes and lengths, strong routing and excellent flash face bunkering which enhaced the strategy.  In bad need of a chainsaw though as is standard on our shores.

Easy pick for me - Cleeve Cloud.  1st honourable mention is Players Club Stranahan Course - stop in for a game and have a chat with Adrian - he is a proper chap.  2nd honourable mention is Seascale.

I was very fortunate to play some great golf courses this year, but a couple that I would classify as "surprises" would be these 2, but for different reasons.

1.) Indianwood CC Old; Living in Michigan for the past 7 1/2 years, I really never heard much about this course, but found the course to be very interesting and enjoyed the layout very much with the exception of a couple holes around the turn.  I can see why they are hosting the US Senior Open next year, and I think its likely that they could set it up in a manner that produces higher scores than we saw this year at Inverness Club.  Had to hit lots of different shots...blind shots, knockdowns ,etc w/ lots of elevation changes and truly enjoyed the round.

2.) Bandon Trails; Ok, so this might not be a course that should surprise someone, but leading up to my first trip to Bandon a lot of what I had read had me not as excited for this inland cousin of the other Bandon courses.  However, after only a few holes I found the variety of landscapes and some great golf holes and I knew I was in for a treat.  Hard for me to pick a favorite on Mr. Keiser's property, but I will say that if BT was a lone course all to itself, it would recieve a lot of aclaim in my opion for being a top top course instead of the course that is thought of after PD and BD.

Hopefully I can add some new suprises for 2012!

A couple outside of Minnesota:

Chambers Bay - pictures don't do CB justice as the scale of the place and its surroundings is just massive, and the golf course is really fun and plays very F&F and features a good deal of quirk. I enjoyed it more than Whistling Straits, which as another massive manufactured dunes/links gets a lot of press, but CB plays a lot more like a links than WS has over the handful of times I've played it.

Biltmore (Miami) - An old Ross course, restored recently by Silva, and set below the huge historic hotel. I thought the course was a lot of fun to play, and unlike the majority of golf in FL, it wasn't overdone and it had a great classic feeling. Worth checking out if in the Miami area.
