Dean (and other GCA-ers) -

When mentioning a less than well-known course, could you please identify where the course is located?
Thanks. ;)

There is a wealth of info in the archives, I will try to find it. A certain poster fond of green letters is a veritable fount of info about BR. :)

In the early 2000s, it was a fantastic track in great shape and a must play if given the opportunity. I was hoping to play the course earlier this fall and was told to not bother because while Boca Rio was a great course, it has fallen out of shape due to the financial downturn.  I can't speak firsthand about its current conditions, but the person who told me that played the course regularly all summer through Columbus Day this year.

David Tepper, Boca Rio is located in Boca Raton, Florida, just south of Glades Road and just west of the Turnpike.

Boca Rio, not to be confused with Del Boca Vista, the residence of Jerry Seinfeld's parents. ;)

If you drive about 3 miles in pretty much any direction from Boca Rio, you will be in Del Boca Vista basically  ;)

I played it with Pat a few years ago.  It's a nice course.  No homes on the interior, in good condition, and a nice selection of holes.  I hate to say it because it's a cliche but it a great members course.  It's not top 10 in Florida but it's an above average course.

A 'fly over' tour can be found on the club's website:

Pat is too modest to ever accept co-designer credit for the course but it would be worth playing, at the very least, to see what one of GCA's most prolific posters  has left there.

Joel Stewart,

I just ran into the club champ at Pine Tree on Sunday.

He told me that he's available to play Boca Rio with 15 minutes advance notice.

He told me that he considers Boca Rio, Pine Tree and Seminole to be the three best courses in South Florida.

Can you tell me which 7 South Florida, and 7 Florida courses you feel are better than Boca Rio ?

David Hendler,

Boca Rio's charter calls for a maximum of 150 members

interested in the answer to this, and Pat I'd be interested in your 'top 10 south florida' list as well - I've been poking around for a few years, with a focus a bit further north...Jupiter/Hobe Sound - most courses have openings and much real estate is down 50%+ from the peak - Jupiter Hills and Loblolly seem particularly interesting to me...I love the concept of Boca Rio, but dividing the costs over only 150 members has burn-rate implications

Joel,

I'm neither offended or defensive, just curious.

You made a definitive statement and I'd like to know which 10 courses in South Florida you consider better.

Keith,

I think Boca Rio and other clubs ran astray when the used their initiation fees, not bonds mind you, but, pure initiation fees, to fund operations.

That process served to distort reality and had to result in problems

Golf Digest list of the top Florida courses is below.  The top 3 are top 100 in the US.  I haven't played all of these but if I had to fit Boca Rio in this list it would be around #15.  Personally I like Medalist as well which is not on this list and would place that around #9.

1. Seminole G.C., Juno Beach ★
2. TPC Sawgrass (Players Stadium), Ponta Vedra Beach (pictured above) ★
3. Calusa Pines G.C., Naples ★
4. The Concession G.C., Bradenton
5. Pablo Creek Club, Jacksonville
6. Black Diamond Ranch (Quarry), Lecanto
7. Jupiter Hills Club (Hills), Jupiter
8. Trump International G.C., West Palm Beach
9. The Bear's Club Jupiter
10. Pine Tree G.C., Boynton Beach
11. John's Island G.C. (West), Vero Beach
12. The Ocean Cse. at Hammock Beach Resort, Palm Coast ♣ ♦
13. Old Memorial G.C., Tampa
14. Isleworth C.C., Windermere
15. Camp Creek G.C., Panama City Beach ♣ ♦
16. Indian Creek C.C., Miami Beach
17. World Woods G.C. (Pine Barrens), Brooksville ♣ ♦
18. McArthur G.C., Hobe Sound
19. Shark's Tooth G.C., Lake Powell
20. Loblolly Pines G.C., Hobe Sound
21. Naples National G.C., Naples
22. Ritz-Carlton Members Club, Bradenton

24. Innisbrook G. Resort (Copperhead), Innisbrook ♣ ♦
25. The Dye Preserve, Jupiter
26. Golden Ocala G. & Equestrian C., Ocala
27. Old Marsh G.C., Palm Beach Gardens

This has potential to last to New Years. This course is Pat for the winter. I found as is typical of Golf Digest not only glaring mistakes but complete omissions. Mountain Lake belongs in the top 5.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Joel,

Boca Rio didn't permit raters, so the list is irrelevant.

And, I didn't ask for someone else's list, I asked for your list.

As to that list, placing Trump (WPB) ahead of Boca Rio is beyond comical.

Boca Rio is superior.... By far.

The same applies to many other courses on that list.
The Floridian ?   That has to be a joke.

As I indicated, Boca Rio didn't allow raters, and as you know, to be rated, there's a minimum requirement in the number of raters in order to be
eligible to be rated.

What's YOUR list ?

Simple answer is there aren't 7 courses in South Florida (or Florida) better than Boca Rio.  It's been a long time since I've played a course that made me think about each shot anywhere near as much as at Boca Rio.  Hard to believe how great the golf course is given the topography and scale.  Like Pine Tree, Boca Rio is proof that sandy soil, extreme scale and elevation change are not needed for a course to be very good and strategic.

While Boco Rio is indeed a good course, it still falls well outside Florida's Top Ten.

Regardless of any order, the likes of Seminole, all 3 Streamsong Courses, Pine Tree, Indian Creek, Calusa Pines, Pablo Creek, TPC Sawgrass, Jupiter Hills are all superior to Boco Rio, based on strategic and architectural values.

Places like Johns Island, McArthur, Concession, Old Memorial, World Woods, Timuquana, or Blue Monster is a much more accurate place for Boco Rio to call a peer group.
The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking."--John Kenneth Galbraith
