Best Golf Courses By Architect
« on: November 18, 2011, 05:26:37 PM »
List your favorite golf course by architect.  You obviously don't need to answer for each architect.  However, if you have played several designs by an architect, don't cop out by saying you don't like that architect (just give the one that you hate the least ;D).  Here is the list of possible architects (feel free to add if you wish):

Old Tom Morris, Tom Simpson, H.S. Colt, C.H. Alison, Alister Mackenzie, Deveraux Emmet, CB Macdonald, Seth Raynor, Donald Ross, Willie Park Jr., Perry Maxwell, AW Tillinghast, Vernon Macan, George Thomas, Walter Travis, Harry Vardon, Tom Bendelow, William Flynn, William Langford, Herbert Fowler, Herbert Strong, Stanley Thompson, Robert Trent Jones Sr., Pete Dye, Fred Hawtree, Robert Trent Jones, Jr., Arthur Hills, Rees Jones, Chet Williams, Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Bill Coore/Ben Crenshaw, Tom Doak, Lester George, Donald Steel, Michael Hurzdan/Dana Fry, Mike Strantz, Mike Clayton, Gil Hanse, David Kidd, Tom Weiskopf, Jay Morrish, Kyle Phillips, Jeff Brauer, Tom McBroom, Greg Norman, Dick Nugent, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer.

Michael,

I think to make this more interesting and to give a point reference, one should list all courses played by any particular architect and bold the favorite.

I think to make this more interesting and to give a point reference, one should list all courses played by any particular architect and bold the favorite.

Only played one Flynn...so Shinnecock is the answer.

Riley...played Atlanta CC (were he re-did the greens), Standard Club were he re-did an Art Hills course and made it awesome, and Reunion that isn't well maintained but contains good architecture, and of course Rivermont.  Atlanta CC is probably the best of that bunch, but he only re-did the greens.  So for a total course re-do, Rivermont is my favorite of the group...but all 4 are good with 3 of them being REALLY good!!

Fazio has been added.  Merely an oversight.  I actually like most Fazio courses.  Plus, I think the answers to the Nicklaus and Fazio designs will be the most interesting.

Mark, you are an animal!
I assume that after the favorite 1,2, or 3, the rest are not listed in order?
And did you give Doak double credit for Sebonack as some sore of Freudian slip.  ;D

Keith, it looks like Mark ranked his top three and then also included them in the complete list of courses for the architect.

Mark, that is pretty intense.  I don't have a single architect where I've played 10 of their courses (unless you count Unknown).

Of the architects I've played 4 or more courses
Gene Bates- Circling Raven
Pete Dye- Bulle Rock
RTJ- Spyglass
RTJ Jr - Chambers Bay
William Bell- Torrey Pines South
William Flynn- Homestead Cascades

Pacific Dunes not in my top three?  That's an outlier of a viewpoint, especially from someone who hasn't played Barnbougle, either.

Then again, I wouldn't agree with your top choices for Nicklaus or Fazio or Dye, either, Mark.

Mark:

Michael,

I have a list of every course I've ever played and I have the same list organized by architect (and another list organizing by decade of construction).

I have never ranked the courses of the individual architect and did that quickly tonight.  I reserve the right to change the order when I look over them (for example I realized I forgot about Kiawah (Ocean)).

I assume that after the favorite 1,2, or 3, the rest are not listed in order?
And did you give Doak double credit for Sebonack as some sore of Freudian slip.  ;D

Keith,

You're right, the rest are not listed in any particular order.

And no slip, sometimes I cut and paste and other times it is double-listed.  Apologies for the confusion.

Tom,

I was questioned in the "Whip it Out" thread about my low ranking of Pac Dunes as well.  The one time I visited Bandon the experience was about as far from positive as could be possible (all external factors, nothing to do with the golf or resort).  While I have 'played' Pacific Dunes and Old Mac and thus are included on my list, I would not rank them.

I have no doubt my Nicklaus pick is debatable, as is my Dye pick (though I have changed it to Kiawah Ocean), but what to you is Fazio's best?

And does that mean you agree with all my other picks?  Ross, S. Thompson, McBroom, RTJ?

Yep, definitely.  I don't know why, but when I think Sebonack I think Doak much more than I think Nicklaus (though in no way am I claiming it is more Doak or Nicklaus or anything) and as a result I have it on my Doak list.

I haven't played the amount of courses as much as others have on this site (not even close, well everyone looks miniscule compared to Saltzman)

Doak-  Pacific Dunes,  Ballyneal, RCCC, Old Mac, Stone Eagle, Tumble, Commonground
Nicklaus- Cabo Del Sol, Pronghorn Nicklaus, Idaho Club, all the ones in the desert
George Thomas- LACC, Riveria, Red Hill
Fazio- Aldarra, all the ones in the desert, and preserve
Dye- Crooked Stick, La Quinta Mountain, all the ones in Indiana and the desert
Weiskopf- Adams Mountain CCFaldo- Shadowridge, Southern Dunes
Engh- Club at Black Rock, Redlands Mesa
Vernon Macan- BroadmoorPalmer- Tradition Club (very underrated), all his courses in the desert, prospector
Ted Robinson- Vista Valley, Sahalee (IMO very overrated)
Max Behr- Rancho Santa Fe, Victoria
John Fought- Sand Hollow, Indian Wells GR Players
Robert Trent Jones Jr. - Chambers Bay

But you might his Colt choice?  An exhausting list but some odd preferences, it seems.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.
