How many golf courses are there in America?

Does this sound about right? What is the breakdown between public and private and resort?  What % are owned by large corporations like Club Corp and Troon? Was there a massive downturn/closings due to recent economics? Is there a “sweet spot” number the US should be? Are courses being built again? Back to previosu levels? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How many golf courses are there in America?

18,514.

There are a total of 18,514 golf courses in America. This is according to an article published on ESPN Golf on July 22, 2009 which quoted a story from the Golf Digest. A later article published in the China Daily on November 3, 2009 quotes the director of the Chinese Ball Game Management Center in the General Administration of Sports as saying that America has 20,000 golf courses among the 30,000 golf courses in the world.

Niall,

As of January 1, 2011, there were 15,890 golf facilities in the U.S., broken down thus= 9,233 daily fee facilities; 2,395 municipal; and 4,262 private.
