Pardon the stupid question. What does ODG stand for?

I think it stands for "old dead guys," or something like that (that is, the so-called golden age architects, Ross, Macdonald, Raynor, etc., those of approximately the first 30 to 40 years or so of the twentieth century).  I cannot recall if someone told me that, or I just assumed it from the context.  As I am sure you've noticed, a lot of abbreviations are used on this website, in part for brevity and in part to separate those "in the know" from those not.  I think it would be interesting to learn how ODG originated.  For example, why not DOGs (dead old guys)?  Or DOAs (dead old architects)?

William Langford might; he was a pretty prolific writer, and often wrote about shot values, hole designs, and strategies in building and routing holes.

I think it would go something like this...

"How old are you people? What have you done with yourselves?

You, you must be almost 30... have you ever kissed a girl?

I didn't think so! There's a whole world out there! When I was your age, I didn't read chat rooms! I LIVED! So... move out of your parent's basements! And get your own apartments and GROW THE HELL UP! I mean, it's just a website, IT'S JUST A FREAKING WEBSITE!"

I'm not sure if it's sadder that I think that's somewhat true, or that I know, without looking it up, exactly where that quote came from.  :)

I won`t speculate about all of them but I am sure that C.B. McDonald would tell us all he could care less what we think and to find something more constructive to do with our time. He was not known to pull punches or to tread lightly. His counterpart Mr. Raynor was certainly less brash and may have been open to a bit of constructive counseling especially if there was some engineering and or construction advice that could help him going forward.

Raynor would be ouuta here after a few months of criticism for his "engineered look" and "cookie cutter" style.

Carl,
The term "Dead Guys" preceded "ODG". I think Rich (Rihc) Goodale first used "Old Dead Guys" back in 2002 in a thread titled "Unplugged Design".

Anthony,

The Spirits of St Andrews through a great little 25 year old Single Malt have asked me to reply to Anthony’s question

You still have much to learn and fully understand, had hoped to see Golf at the centre stage by now but its been hijacked by something called cart/buggy. Bugger me, what has that to do with Golf.

How can you have Golf Club Atlas or even seriously discuss golf courses design while in the same breath talking about Non Walking Golf Courses.

Looks like Hell has frozen over and the Devil Rules, expect the R&A did their usual disappearing act up their own rectum (or anyone else’s in the vicinity), they need a new party piece.

Turning in our graves is fine but those who have had their ashes scattered are a little bit more upset as can’t come together to form a sentence or make their opinions known.
