Tim - Misquamicut. Primarily for the greens which I observed have tons of movement. And, holes 11 - 17 a bit less interesting than the earlier holes. Nothing wrong with Shelter Harbor, however, and I could play that course everyday and not get tired.

Interesting list and a few I've never heard of. Any worth going out of the way to play besides the usual suspects?

Tim, Abersoch and Portmadog (Braid)  are rather similar in that they both have a run of excellent old links holes which have been extended by the addition of a neighbouring 'pasture'. If you could merge the front 9 at Abersoch with the back 9 at Portmadog you would have a real fun 18. I particularly enjoyed the wild holes in the big dunes at Portmadog, 10-15 are really  challenging in the wind with long par 3s and short par 4s - probably worth the green fee alone if you're in the area.

West Linton is another Braid course high in the moorland south of Edinburgh, very exposed  though with the payoff of great open views in every direction. A good mix of holes and  decent condition with a brutal up hill par 3 to finish. A few holes which are a bit samey laid out on similar terrain but I'd happily go back for another visit - (also the clubhouse is nice and friendly with a very extensive & tasty menu).

Muckhart has 3 nines all of which loop back to the clubhouse. We played the Arndean and Cowden loops. The Arndean seemed to be about 7 holes up the hill and 2 back down again which unfortunately got a bit monotonous. It was pretty soggy underfoot which didn't help. The Cowden 9 had quite a bit more character and variety to the holes but was also pretty wet. I don't think we'll be rushing back again when Auchterarder is just up the road.

Torwoodlee is another Braids design nestled just outside Galashiels. I actually made two trips there this summer one at the invitation of a friend and the other with my wife as I thought she'd enjoy the course. It does have a few steep climbs but otherwise than that it is a very enjoyable, perhaps typical, local Braids course. Not unlike nearby Peebles or Aberdour. The signature hole is a drivable par 4 from high on the hill and the direct 'tiger' line is over a forest down below you to the green. If you can carry the ball 200 on the flat it is doable and great fun.

Finally I was lucky enough to have a 36 hole day at Glenbervie near Falkirk, yet another Braid parkland course but one that I always enjoy. It is set amongst mature trees but is mostly wide enough you are not hemmed in. A good set of par 3's and some long par 4s. Greens were excellent when we were there (August). One unusual feature is on the 17th were there are some trees parked in the middle of the fairway. Locals argue that it is our challenge to manoeuvre around them (it's a par 5) but I just find them too awkward and irritating to buy that. Likely that's a sign my skills need improved. On the whole perhaps every course would be enriched by the existence of one feature which splits opinion!

Sean, I'm surprised you've not been to Aberdour given its location. I've played there quite a lot over the years and besides the excellent views over the Forth and the novelty of starting with 2 par 3s is a very pleasant parkland course. They have done quite a bit of work improving the bunkering and the drainage over the last few years which has paid off. I won't pretend it is a top quality parkland in the league of Burgess or Mortonhall, but I enjoy it regularly and it is short/open enough to be enjoyable for players who haven't been playing very long. The greens are a bit plain-Jane but some are quite small so no pushover.

Probably more words than you were looking for but the conclusion (again) is that there is plenty of decent golf to be found off the beaten track if you have the time to try it out.
