"Is NSWGC better than Deal?"

I was asked this question today as I defended NSWGC against a somewhat outlandish claim that it doesn't belong in the Top 20 in Australia.

It got me wondering about these two courses so near and dear to my heart, and it's a hard one to answer because they share almost nothing at all in common.

Of course the prevailing wisdom is that the answer to the question is "yes", seeing NSWGC sits around 50th on Golf Mag's Top 100 World list and Deal is currently in the 40s in Golf World's GB&I list.

I can see arguments both ways, and so - knowing there are at least a dozen or so people on this site that I know of who've played both (and surely countless others as well) - I'd love to hear how others view the match-up.

If someone says NSW isn't top 20 in Australia it is pointless arguing with them. Standing at the top of the 5th fairway I'd have to say NSW beats RCP as it is an all world hole and RCP doesn't have any of them. However NSW has a tannoy in the main lounge and that is inexcusable so RCP wins!

I am not sure that one 'all world' hole necessarily gives NSW the edge.  I had a similar discussion last week with someone comparing NSW to Lake Karrinyup and Kingston Heath.  We both concluded that the although Kingston Heath and Karrinyup had no 'all world' holes, the consistently excellent architecture and vegetation management, and lack of 'mistakes' made them worthy of a higher ranking than NSW.  I can understand people going the other way and preferring an inconsistent course with some big highlights, but I don't think it is an open and shut case that the course with the bigger highlights is best. 

Tannoy's are Scottish, are they not?

You raise an interesting point of consistency v inconsistency.

Not that I want to divert the thread with a comparison to Pebble Beach but it's comparisons to NSW are interesting. Both built on ground up from the ocean that traverses along the cliffs and back inland.They both have a number of highs but they also have a number of lesser holes which detract from the overall experience IMO notwithstanding their great visual appeal.

As far as Deal v NSW - I think the later is a better course. Better routing, variety and use of topography. Deals strength  is largely built around but one thing IMO - it's greens.

David - I cannot imagine sitting in the lounge at Muirfield and hearing a loudspeaker blaring out "the next group to the tee General Sir Hamish Pinkerton-McTavish and His Honour Judge McLeod of McLeod"

certainly not.  Pinkerton-McTavish would never play with McLeod, not after that incident on the 14th green last year.

The Deal comparison aside I am confused at how NSW get's such high rankings.

IMO the holes alone are just average, the views are fantastic. If that layout was in the suburbs or out in the country would it even get a mention?

There is half a dozen courses from Melbourne to the Mornington Peninsula I would play over NSW...

I read so many threads about NSW with a lot of guys singing it's praise and I find myself sitting back thinking what am I missing?
