Aerial of the Day #5 (and 6) - 25 Jan 2002
« on: January 25, 2002, 05:47:11 AM »
Since I said I wouldn't be posting any aerials on the weekend, I decided that on Fridays, I'll post 2 pics, an easy one for Friday and a hopefully not-so-easy one for the weekend.

Here's the easy one (a course no one on this site likes).  A great example of width here, notice the difference in the width of the fairways in this one with the width of the fairways in the adjacent "wuss" course on the lower right:

An the not-quite-as-easy one:

Scott,
What a great picture of the top course, I think I see the windmill...  As for the bottom one, I'll have to think a little bit!  Keep up the great work :D

This second one is going to be difficult, I can hardly make anything out.

As for the first pic, there are those on this site who probably support a rule that would require ID'ing the picture as a precondition to joining GCA.com.

Scott:

Thanks for the posts - your efforts are appreciated.

No clue on photo #2; The first is in my top 3 places to play golf.  The Cape hole we were discussing on the Bobby Jones thread (#14) must have been quite something in its original configuration with the green across the road extending into Bulls Head Bay.  Also, #12 tee to the LEFT of #11 green presented a totally different set of problems.  It clearly made the route up #7 fairway pretty attractive - obvious now why they had to move the tee to the other side for safety reasons.

George Bahto:

Do you have time to give us some observations?

Help!

As one who could not have identified even Course No. 1 without the windmill hint, I have a request: Would those of you lucky sons o' guns who've played [COURSE NAME DELETED -- AT REQUEST OF MATT DAVENPORT -- dk] -- THERE! Someone finally said it! -- please annotate the picture for me?

Thanks.

My tatoo looks better than this picture... only problem is everything gets reversed as I look in the mirror... very confusing.

OK Dan, basic orientation there is the 18th green and 1st tee are the farthest LEFT things you see.  #1 goes to the right, with clubhouse above and left... 2 makes a right turn from there, then the course basically goes out in the direction of 2 until turning around and coming back on the same line.  THE REDAN #4 (bow down and worship) turns to the side and back a little, but this orientation follows pretty much consistently.  You can see all the greens and tees.  The whole thing makes an interesting shepherd's crook sorta similar to another oft-discussed course... but it is indeed out and back, for the most part.

The 2nd best course in the area (for now) comes up at the lower right, on the other side of the stand of trees, as Scott says.

Hopefully this helps.  As you can see, I'm not the best at describing pictures!

Dan,
Hole #1 is the lower hole of the two in the upper left (teeing off to the east), and the front nine goes down the left side, ending with #9 at the bottom.  Both par 3's on the front, Redan (#4) and Short (#6), head in a NE direction.

If anyone hasn't been to the GCA NGLA write-up lately, there is a bunch of new (and better) pics to help with the undestanding of the course.  One pic has a shot of a rarety in golf, a woman (the former Ms. Luigs) walking and carrying her own bag (I get giddy when I see it).

Does the front nine go counterclockwise around the perimeter on pic#2?  Hmmmmmmm?

I notice the pond in the second pic.  The bunkers would make me think maybe a Tillinghast design.

Front nine is the "lower-right-ish" half of the holes, and back nine is "upper-left-ish" half of the holes, finishing with the long straight hole right down the middle to the right of the range.  (I figured this out from the scorecard on golfcourse.com).

Hint: This is a well-known course.

More hints to come after (EST) lunch time if it hasn't been guessed yet.

Scott:

I don't want to spoil all the fun for the weekend, but are we looking at a course in Ohio?  I only know because I played it last May.

Pond  ???

Is that a split fairway in the middle (or better put, does the first fairway run out?)

Come on guys, let's figure out this second one, and make NGLA, for the first time in the history of this site, a secondary discussion.

Coupling Rick's response with my own email (if my observation about the split fairway is correct), I think i got it.

Dan - I don't have it yet, but I believe I'm thinking along the same lines you are... just can't find a famous short par 4 in that pic... I also could be way off but I'm BEARish on my chances here.
