Vander Borght, #1 Seed, Somerset, Hole #2, 175 yards

From Ran... Tillinghast, like Macdonald, tried to make as many annual trips to Great Britain as possible. Like Macdonald, Tillinghast was impressed with the Redan hole at North Berwick. Combined, the two produced the two finest versions of it in the United States. This one is set over land that begs for it. More so than with other Redans, the player pays a significant price for missing the green to the right as this green is pitched severely to the back-left corner. The only shame is that the rear of the green has subsided to such a degree over the years that there are only two real hole locations: front and back-center. While tinkering with one of the great holes in American golf would make many nervous, clubs should be able to recognize a hole in need of a little help. Tillinghast’s own take on Redans was that ‘some of the most interesting holes are those where the best line of the flag is not direct.’ He delivered on this point at the 2nd hole.

I appreciate the "out of the boxness" to Mountain Lake", but gotta go with Somerset based on looks and playability.

Hang on, the 4th image on the Somerset section is SH? It looks to be a totally different hole! I don't think it fits either course and looks like a C&C style hole. Is that bad or what? I look at a photo and of a hole that is meant to be "natural" (I presume) yet I think of only one guy who would have built it.

BTW What happened to North Berwick?

This is Hidden Creek:

Both actually have their flaws, Somerset has too much slope and Mountain Lake is a little too flat on the bottom left side. I would call it a push.

In January, Mountain Lake by a mile.

in all deference to Mr Sweeney (who wrote a very very good review of Mt Lake...see In MY Opinion section!!),

1. ML"s redan has a fairly significant elevation drop, whcih, imo, somewhat negates the "eye appeal" as your shot progesses
(personal prefernce I'm sure...)

2. But, a more substantive detraction is that ML's front right entrance/approach has a significantly abrupt elevation increase, which makes the option of playing a running shot not only very difficult, but,imo eliminates it as a "viable" option.

ML LOTS of fun to play, but SH get's my vote....... excepting December through March...of course!
