Is Saunton the best deal in England?
« on: June 14, 2011, 10:27:49 AM »
I have played Saunton only a couple of times but found it to be a most enjoyable place.  The East course is exceptional and the West course is charming among some of the bigger dunes.  Both are highly rated in most Magazines.  There seems to be limited play and the clubhouse is comfortable.  The fees, at least by American standards, are very  affordable.  I have an overseas membership at Westward Ho! and love the place but I think Saunton is a better place to play and stay.

At more than twice the cost of Silloth for a local member, the answer must be no.  Even the 90+ mile country membership is more than full membership at Silloth.  Chappers may confirm but I believe Deal has a cheaper country membership.  I remain convinced that Silloth is perhaps the best value golf club in the UK.  Saunton does, however, represent very good value indeed.

NB.  I am aware of several even cheaper deals.  Goswick at, I think £325 pa membership.  I pay £330 pa at Crail and it also has two courses.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Tommy,

That is remarkably good value. But with our current petrol costs I don't think I'll be applying for country membership!

Best wishes,

Mark

Saunton is very slightly cheaper for overseas membership (£2.25!) and up to 100 miles, we are better value for country members in the UK.

By and large the cheaper country and foreign memberships are further from the main transport hubs. You are quite right petrol is a big factor, more of our London members are getting organised and sharing lifts. Also the trains do 3 or 4 for the price of 2 at the weekend bringing the fare down to around £15 return if 4 travel together.

We have a large contingent of guys who visit 3 or 4 times a year for a weekend to play in big events, socialise in town before returning home after golf and Sunday lunch. Happy days!

Silloth is one of those places I need to visit.  I have only heard great things about it. I think what makes Saunton so compelling is the choice between two high quality courses.  I know some have suggested that the East course could serve as a sight for The Open.  I don't agree with that assessment but it sure is good. I have come to the point in my life that when I go back to the UK I would prefer to stay and play at one place, rather than drive to see a bunch of courses.  In terms of a 10 day trip for an overseas membership it is an excellent value.

Tommy,

Fly in to Manchester and I'll drive you to Silloth. It's a must. We could throw in Seascale (character aplenty) and Southerness (a hidden gem) on the same journey. Green fees will not be excessive!

If you do get together for this, I'd love to join you for some or all of it.

David,

There's no Country Membership at Silloth.  Full membership is £375 pa, with a joining fee of £300.

It is amazing how Silloth charges their members £375pa as they cannot have the visitor income that some of the smaller but tourist route Scottish courses draw in. It must be the bargain of the present time, just a shame the nearest population centre is a long way away!

Silloth can't touch Pennard for value.  Pennard is £115 cheaper a year and no entry fee for country membership.  Plus Pennard has the best pro in the UK who will help with little things like hosting Buda on a weekend - tee hee.  Saunton's country dues are almost exactly the same as Burnham.  One thing very good about Burnham is a country member is the same as a full member in all rights and priviledges.  Westward Ho! is very reasonably priced for country membership.  I nearly joined Saunton when I joined Pennard.  Right when I was about to join the country dues nearly doubled.  I got a bit nervous about the club trying to suck too much out of country members (a very common problem).  Indeed, two guys I know quit when the fees went up.

Sean - the Silloth price is for full membership with no country category. Remarkable value for a UK top 100 course.

I'd be very glad to make up the fourball.

Sean,

Golf World in its top 1000 in the UK book had a top value for money course based on daily green fee and Silloth came out at No 1. While Pennard might be cheaper I'll be interested to hear how they rate value for money wise. I also suggest that you would be able to play a BUDA at Silloth during a weekend provided it didn't clash with any big tourny.

Chappers

Yes, thats fine if you are one of the 50 people living within an hour of the club. For the rest of us its a good deal, but not spectacularly so.

I am intrigued by the TOC, Carnoustie and NB clubs.  Presumably membership isn't too expensive and if one doesn't have much time in any given year he doesn't have to purchase the links ticket - no?

I think the population of Carlisle is a bit more than 50!

I feel like a guy in jail listening to the wardens arguing whether Hawaii is better value than Southern California and then the supervisor comes by and says that to him life wouldn't be worth living if he'd have to put up with anything less than Tahiti.

Pennard does look exceptional value at £264 pa for country (distance) membership. It is also located in one of the most scenic parts of the UK for a family holiday - I can feel a plan coming on for next year...

I particularly like their unusually relaxed dress code - mandatory jeans & rugby shirts!

http://www.pennardgolfclub.com/greenfees.asp

Dress Code
Denim jeans, football/rugby tops and cargo trousers /shorts.  Shorts to be tailored with belt loops.  Socks with shorts to be knee length or sport socks (predominantly white). Turtle neck golf shirts allowed.  All shirts to be tucked in.

Spikes may be worn.
