Hole in the Wall GC,Naples, FL, Dick Wilson, 1957
« on: March 30, 2011, 07:20:38 PM »
A friend recently played this private club in Naples and raved about it. I haven't seen much discussion here about this course although I seem to remember that it was recently restored. There is no website for the club.

I did find this:

http://www.ryangolf.com/golf-renovation-projects-detail.php?id=306

There was nothing listed on Ron Forse's website.

Any comments?

It's listed on Ron Garl's website but there's no info.

Is this club so exclusive that no one has played it?

I just found this about the renovation:

I played it.  Low key member's course where social and financial standing is intentionally downplayed.  Holes 2-9 are as strong a stretch found anywhere in FLA.  Tiny pro shop.  Simple cokes and sandwiches for lunch.  Members sign bills on blank pieces of white paper.  Muted to the point of silence.   J

Palyed it last September, post renovation. A lok of similarites to Pine Tree. Very interested Dick Wilson green complexes. A course I could play a couple times a week.

Landlocked club originally designed to be a championship caliber course that ended up being a very short, contrived Wilson design for Port Royal residents.
Silly doglegs, constricting width, boring green contours, bland bunkering. However, there is some Wilson genius to be found here, a couple of the holes are among his finest, though saying 2-8 are among Florida's finest might be one the silliest statements I've heard.
The experience here is much greater than the golf.
