Wolf: full explanation please
« on: March 12, 2011, 03:50:15 AM »
Guys,
A few games of Wolf were played down at Barnbougle, Scott gave a brief explanation, could some one well versed, DK, JM or others, provide detailed explanation - I'd like to play with a few mates here.

Cheers in advance

Brett

Wolf can be a great friendly game or the kind of game that makes you want to vomit before you hit your putt.  It all depends on how it is played and for what...

There are several versions of Wolf. Also known as "Captains" the standard involves a rotating captain, always the first to tee off.

Other versions include Wolf Pig. Air Wolf. Or, Even the newest form a friend made up here. That one is really different. Par 3's the Captain must pick before anyone hits. Par 4's after everyone has hit and Par 5's after everyone's second shot. Teams, in this version don't change until all the points are won. It's actually not a bad break from the typical Wolf.

Wolf/Pig is when the player picked by the Captain refuses and goes it alone.

Air Wolf is when the Captain must pick his partner before the ball hits the ground.

All forms require teeing off in order throughout the round. with the one exception that once a team is made the tee order is not relevant.

Brett, Bob Huntley would tell you but it's proprietary.

How are you hitting the persimmons?

Hi Bill,
Yes the Persimmons are fantastic, I took them out late Friday for a hit, they feel so good when you hit them, they look great, I love the little brass insert in the back, do you know if that was an innovation that was popular?

so thank you very much, they have come to a good home. And thanks also to gentleman Mike got adding the extra weight to his luggage, I am most grateful.

Many hours of fun to follow!
Thanks mate, beer on me when you get down in 2013 for the next Boomerang!

Cheers
Brett

Kyle's explanation is spot on.

The variation we see at MPCC is in a fivesome. The Wolf picks his partner and the two of them play the other three. If the pair of them win they are each gain plus three points on the hole, the losers are minus two apiece. Tied holes are carried over. Some sizeable numbers can be reached if the carry overs continue for several holes and the Wolf, at a par three, stiffs it to the hole and cries Pig.

A wonderful game and the scorer is advised to use a green and red pencil for plus and minuses, it makes the game easier and especially if the game finishes with a Turbo.

And the Wolf is advised to always take as a partner, a player who gets a stroke or two on the hole ...

And never ever go as Lone Wolf against your host, just trust me on this one ...

Brett, glad you are enjoying them.  The brass insert was exclusive to the PowerBilts as far as I know.  Gave them a little kick!

I am under the impression the game is fairly simple:  You make a bet on the first tee and four hours later hand cash to Bob Huntley.

I have it on good authority that Bob's Wolf winnings amply support his expensive champagne habit.

That's how I thought it worked too.

Just this last weekend, I played golf with three friends down here in Melbourne, and we elected to play Wolf.
I've got a cheque in an air mail envelope on its way to Bob as we speak!

Trying to set up a one day Huntley Rules wolf tournament at our course. Flights of fifteen by handicap. Starts with three 6 hole matches, which can go one extra hole carryover. After each six hole segment the flight is scrambled by points, top five play each other, etc. After a break for lunch, the top five in each flight plays a nine hole wolf starting at zero points. Encourgae spectators. action.
How does this sound?

Would someone like to spnd a few minutes and provide us with a GCA Exhibition Wolf Match....please?

Featuring Mr Huntley at the course of his choosing, Scott Warren (Aussie contingent), Pete Pittock & Michael Hendren (with Mike Benham tagging in off the bench)

Each point worth $1

aim is to provide an understanding of some of the nuances of the game for a true novice.

9 or 18 holes - your choice.
