GCA Boomerang 2011 - thoughts, memories, pictures etc.
« on: March 07, 2011, 09:59:11 PM »
It's not considered polite at GCA events for the results to be reported, much less celebrated, but Australia is nothing if not a competitive country, especially in sport, so it wouldn't be right if the outcome of Australia's new GCA event were ignored.

Sadly, as a member of the Rest Of World team, it is my duty to report that the Australian Mainland team won the inaugural Boomerang by 26 points to 21.

But anyone who has been to a GCA event knows the result and the scores pale in comparison with how much fun is had on and off the course by those in attendance.

We had a brilliant time in Tassie this past weekend, perfect weather, light winds (other than Thursday afternoon when those who arrived early copped a hiding at Lost Farm) and plenty of laughs.

After 16 months of planning, it was fantastic to see the event run without a hitch - though Kyle Henderson might argue flight delays that saw him arrive at Melbourne Airport at 10am on Thursday and finally exit Launceston Airport (45 minutes' flight away) just before 9pm constitutes a hitch...

Above all it was a highlight to renew some friendships with mates from around the globe and meet a heap of new folks.

Some other highlights include:

* A presentation from Barnbougle Superintendent, Phil Hill, who shared a story of going to Mike Clayton over the issue of sand blowing from bunkers and settling on greens, only to be met with the solution of "Fuck it. It's going to keep happening, we just have to live with it!". It was also revealled that his 2IC is Ricky Ponting's (Aussie cricket captain) younger brother.

* Owner Richard Sattler detailing the long road that led to the facility as we know it today, including the interesting tidbit that Tom Doak is a minority owner of Barnbougle Dunes.

* Kyle Henderson ensuring that Sean Walsh's warning about the native animals causing issues on the drive was not in vain - obliterating a wallaby at 85km/h as he made his way back to the airport on Sunday.

* Wayne Freeman (-3), Michael Taylor (+1) and Scott Coan (+3) [all scored over 20 holes] putting Barnbougle Lost Farm to the sword on a very still Saturday morning.

* David Elvins' shirt at dinner on Friday night.

* David Shannon (one of our non-GCA.com participants), playing off 8, recording a whopping 10 birdies in his first four rounds of the weekend.

* The commemorative shirts and hats Dieter Jones created.

* David Kelly's glove tan.

* Patrick Kiser soldiering on with some of the most inflamed feet I have ever seen to steal second place in a game of Wolf on Saturday afternoon at LOst Farm, despite remaining blissfully ignorant of the rules up to the final hole, where he had to be talked out of going Lone Wolf after yanking his tee shot into the gunch.

* Mike Whitaker's resolve to stay on the course after a night damaging the Doulton, fixing himself with a stare in the mirror and reminding himself he didn't fly 15,000 miles to lie in bed all day.

* Scott Coan, Andy Gray and Dustin Knight's contingents managing to play some golf on Sunday after what was by all accounts a sterling display of support for the local James Boag Brewery the previous night.

So where to next year?

There are a few options on the table, though Paraparaumu Beach is an early favourite, with a loose plan that we will return to Barnbougle every second year.

Of course many of us took advantage of Melbourne's proximity to Tasmania and spent some time on the Sandbelt before flying to Tassie.

I think many of us were blown away by Royal Melbourne (West) as well as the free scones on offer in the clubhouse, while a small group of us were treated to a fantastic afternoon and evening at Yarra Yarra by head pro and GCAer Andrew Bertram, for which we are all extremely grateful.

Those of us who saw Peninsula (North) with a wonderful host were, to a man, really impressed by a bit of a sleeper that is packed with great holes, while two very generous Kingston Heath members ensured the tour for many included a round at their gem, which for mine is remarkably similar in many ways to Walton Heath's Old Course back in London.

Metro and St Andrews Beach completed the rota for some of us, while others took in The National and Kyle Henderson completed a tour de force that included upwards of 24 courses in about two weeks!

As the organiser, I want to thank everyone who made the effort to attend the event - from Dieter Jones making the short drive from Hobart to New York/New Jersey duo Mike Whitaker and Bill Brightly making the longest journey of the group. It was a hell of a good weekend, and hopefully one we can repeat again in 2012.

The pic tour threads and reviews will no doubt begin soon as everyone returns home, but here a few of the participants in action:

A local enjoying Barnbougle Dunes on Friday morning.

Bill Brightly in a uncomfortable position on 7 at Lost Farm.

David Elvins in his golf-themed shirt on Friday night. John Mayhugh had played all bar two of them, unsurprisingly!

Patrick with his divot on 13A at Lost Farm, so fat and pefectly carved that the tee stayed in it!

David Kelly on 16 at RM East.

Andy Gray takes a sun-drenched walk to the 5th at Barny Dunes.

Brett Morrissy narrowly misses saving par from the beach on 17 at Barny Dunes.

Andy Gray impersonates the 10 handicapper he claims to be, before reeling off a stretch of +1 over 11 holes that put me to the sword and saw his bandit handicap called into question

Patrick Kiser putts for eagle on 15 at RM West. He left the 40-footer 25ft short!

Mark Ferguson channeling Camilo Villegas on the 3rd at RM East.

Patrick Kiser on the 4th at RM West.

Dustin Knight shows how a golf swing should look on the 4th at Lost Farm, but looks aren't everything - he still went on to take his career record v S. Warren to 0-2! (and how about those strides?!)

John Mayhugh with a couple of kick-in birdies on the 8th at St Andrews Beach.

Mayhugh on 16 at RM East, en route to a par.

Matt Mollica shows off his style on 15 at Kingston Heath, eventually saving an incredible par from the front left trap.

Mayhugh, Kelly and Sven Nilsen capture the 2nd at St Andrews Beach.

Kevin Pallier plugged in the face of the gigantic bunker on the 4th at Barny Dunes. Not a favourite holes of his, somehow...

Sven Nilsen's hard-earned sunglasses tan.

Raymond Floyd circa 1976Brett Morrissy in a spot of trouble on 15 at Metro.

Scott,

Thanks for the pictures.  Been looking forward to hearing peoples thoughts about the courses played.  Peninsula is a course I really enjoyed, I must get back to play the second one at some stage.

Congratulations on the organization.  Hope Parparaumu comes off.

Scott - well done for making a start on a thread...

Congratulations to the Events #1 Poster - S Warren - for a terrific job getting us started over here in Oz.

a few great memories for me:
*David Kelly's sunburnt glove hand, cap skull and ankles were text book.
*Tyler's magical skills with a wedge and golf ball - if I can figure out how to you tube them I will.
*The Kiwi contingent supply of alcohol and cigars was very large
*etting smashed in my first Boomerang round by said Kiwi Richard (non GCA) 8&7 - lowlight
*Sat PM round at Barny - 76 with 3 lost balls - scoring highlight
*Not sure if Pup got to break 73 with the flop shot - I am sure he will tell us, amazing to meet a young bloke this interested - keep it up.
*Meeting all the great people of GCA - highly recommend anyone who has not made the effort or had the opportunity - to get to a GCA event near you
*Again, Dave's shirt was awesome and potentially, if stock available, the next event uniform for the home team?
*Meeting Mark Ferguson's alter ego, the non keyboard one, a great quiet and friendly bloke, nothing like I had imagined.
*Kevin Pallier was much larger than I had imagined, and we enjoyed a couple terrific bottles of wine.
*Playing with David K & John Mayhugh at Metro, along with Scott -was a great intro - man they have played some courses.
*Rules discussion on the way home in bus adjudicated by David Shannon.
*My wonderful new Persimmon woods from Bill McBride hand delivered by his mate Mike Whittaker - thanks guys, they are great...and I hit em ok.
*Pat's feet (ankles) also a highlight - I think pride prevented him from playing our last round in bare feet, as the fescue would have been soft and cool... well done Pat.
*Bill Brightly's wonderful smooth draw - a great golfer - man, that is some practice putting swing though.
*Scott Coan led the Kiwi contingent and must get the award for the most f & c bombs in one breath - another great golfer.
- actually the afternoon round at LF with Terry T, Scott and Scott was one of some great golf, even if Terry stands on the wrong side of the ball.
*Does Kyle have the largest guns on GCA? ...a classic and a pleasure to play with, a excellent pre event warm up for 36 holes at 13th Beach.
* hole by hole matchplay as we played with Sven, Pat and Dave - an interesting result that was Dormie at 16 BD's way, and finished 2 up.
*Dieter's head and shirt gear was first class and very well organised! thanks Dieter.
* and finally, apart from all the great conversations, on the courses, at meals and at the bar, on the deck at the cabins until very early morning - was the magnificent 36 holes that are Barnbougle Dunes - bring on 2013, and hopefully 2012 in New Zealand

Bill setting up for the beautiful draw - a little wedge into Lost Farm 13A from up the top on the Blue tee

...and the smoothing of that draw - I think to about 10 feet - the view toward the sea off this tee is excellent, and shows the land between here and the large 'moving' dune

Tyler Ince one handing it into Lost Farm 4 - do you know he can also spin a ball on a wedge and juggle - El Diablo !

can you beleive your eyes - the Gun Show's power captured mid pitch of his little wedge into LF 4 - the swing flex I beleive is an optical illusion.

Dusty having a crack at BD 4, the result was a sandy and ironic one....

and finally, (i hope he doesn't mind me posting this), at a pre tourny warm up, a fellow GCAer ACE'd the 16th at Barnbougle Dunes, bar duly shouted !

Brett,

Great call on Bill's practice putting stroke. I believe he is travelling for a few more days, but I hope he might enlighten us about why he does that when he checks in.

That afternoon round at Dunes was a great one, you're right. No shots to be given, four guys of similar skill all in decent form, good weather and a great course... what more could you want?

Though that reminds me that I owe both you and Scott C a beer after I left before my shout following that round to go and freshen up for dinner!

Scott,

I asked Bill about his practice putting stroke, he said that it felt normal to him and that he swung his practice stroke at a speed that he thought it needed to go in the hole.

What do you make of Kyle's shaft flex?

That is crazy shaft flex! And his swing looks so effortless...

Let me say I am sure there isn't another GCAer who can bench 425lb in sets of 10. Those are just crazy numbers.

Gentlemen,
Now that the afficiandos who were present at Barnbougle and Lost Farm last weekend are regaling you with critiques and in-depth discussion regarding these marvellous courses and their architecture please indulge me.
I offer this wee bit of doggerel in homage to the The Boomerang itself, Scott Warren’s organisation of the event, the excellent company and the wonderful golf courses we had the delight to play over. I did not write the original draft (I left that to Samuel Taylor Coleridge) but I did “compose” this adaptation before I turned up at Bridport, Tasmania. My first round on Lost Farm, in a 40km/hour wind left me thinking I should have used Dante’s Inferno, not Kubla Kahn, as my template. Hell, maybe Purgatory, but definitely not Heaven would be a fair description of the conditions that Thursday afternoon. Happily the rest of the weekend was idyllic with gentle breezes and benign conditions which fully justified my original choice and plagiarism thereof. So here it is.

The Boomerang and Kubla Kahn

In Tassie did The Boomerang
A stately pleasure trip decree:
Where many a sacred river ran
Through dunes and hills not made by man
Down to a sparkling sea.

So twice with miles of fertile ground
With swales and bunkers scattered round:
And here were greens alright with serious thrills
Where blossomed many an incensed putting spree;
And here were fairways nascent in the hills,
Awaiting honeyed shots from off the tee.

And so!...that sweet earth once potato-planted
Sown and green will now reward a certain duffer!
A special space! as holy and enchanted
As any near the old grey toon was vaunted
By Trojan whaling at his golfball’s cover.

The golfer freed to roam at leisure
Toted mid-round his par saves:
Fore's the word, unmingled pleasure.
No score mounting this he craves.
It was empirical this rare device
One sweet-struck treasured drive behaves, no slice!

Two architects with Rick Sattler
In a vision this they saw:
It was a fine Elysian glade,
And on this field golf could be played,
Thanks to Doak, Coore and no flaw.
Did they connive in places windy
Where fast and firm belong,
Did such to keep delight within thee
And golden age ideas prolong,
And did gild this home of prayer,
This pleasure dome! with holes of spice!
Barnbougle Dunes and Lost Farm there
Each golfer cries Be fair!  Be fair!
His slashing drive, his pitching flair!
Leave no putt short at any price,
Now close your eyes in his step tread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed
And drunk the milk of Paradise.

Thank you and goodnight!

Cheers Colin
"Golf, thou art a gentle sprite, I owe thee much"

To be fair you are world Aussie Rules Football champions.

Is Mark Ferguson the first person ever to be photographed doing one handed push ups on the greens at RM?

Is Dustin Knight related to Mark Pearce?

Chappers,

To be fair to Dustin, he wasn't the only culprit.

His buddy David was rocking a few different pairs of loud pants during the week, Brett Morrissy had a pair or two of fancy strides and David Elvins had a pretty strong supply of eye-catching vintage gear, like a Trevino-esque (massive peak) Pebble Beac h cap complete wit cord trim on the front.

Colin,
That is fine work - well done - did you get to "let the nothingness in"?  I didn't catch you before you left!

Guys,
I wanted to propose some matches once everyone is back, of course there is the obvious of the two courses at Barnbougle Dunes - but, I think it would be fruitful, now that a few more of our Northern Hemisphere visitors have seen them,  to compare the architects work.
Barnbougle Dunes vs Pacific Dunes vs Ballyneal/St Andrews Beach or another private Renaissance course.
Lost Farm vs Bandon Trails vs Sand Hills/ Friars Head/Hidden Creak or another private C&C course that a few may have seen.

Surely we can now call MF "Spiderman"?

Mark, I believe us Aussies had the luck of the Irish on our side...;)

I had forgotten about that.  No wonder I had to cart it the next morning at Peninsula.

It was nice to meet you, Brett.  Hopefully we can have a hit sometime soon.  If I go down to visit my father, I'll pop in for a coffee scroll.

I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Having just landed in Chicago, being slightly jet-lagged and still tired from the two-a-days, it took me a moment to remember to remove the international travel adapter from my power cord before plugging in my laptop.  Now that I'm slightly settled, I thought I'd share a few of the photo-moments I captured over the weekend (no worries Scott - the photo you asked to be deleted will not be shared).

A followup on tan lines:

If anyone can identify this gentleman, please do so:

These are for David Elvins, who handled a most unfortunate rub of the green at a very crucial point in a match with the utmost decorum and good nature:

A Sunday afternoon group shot (please note the mystery gentleman from photo #2 is lurking on the left):

I believe Terry Thornton ordered those drinks:

More to follow.

Thanks again to Scott and the rest of the locals.  It was a thoroughly enjoyable trip and you guys went out of your way to make us feel welcome.

Scott-

Kudos all around for a great job and thank you so much for putting in all that work.  It was a truly wonderful experience and I was so impressed with the group.  It was because of you that I realized a long time dream to come to Australia.

I wasn't there the entire weekend but did manage to meet some great guys from there:

Sean Walsh=    loved the stories about his days as a caddy at St. Andrews

James Bennett-   the best tour guide.. gave us great insights on our first round at Barnbougle.

Mark Ferguson-  passionate about golf and maybe the nicest guy in the land.

Kevin Pallier-  a class guy who kept me totally entertained.......  I was amazed to hear his story of his
odyssey to seek out and play the great courses in the U.S.

I would go back to Australia in a flash.  Even though it is a long trip from California, it was a total blast.  The people are so warm and friendly, the food is terrific, and the weather and topography are much like our fair state.
The other courses my buddy Ron and I played:

Royal Adelaide,  Royal Sydney, New South Wales (x2), St. Andrews Beach, the Open and Legends courses at Moonah,
Yarra Yarra,  Victoria, Metropolitan, Royal Melbourne East and West, and Kingston Heath... altogether with Barnbougle...
     16 rounds in 11 days.

note...      major league highlight.....   hitting the green from the upper 16 tee on Barnbougle across the water to the 4th green at Lost Farm.

Scotty - I can't thank you enough for making the Boomerang dream come true. Although it was two years ago, it seems like yesterday that we were talking about you putting an Australian GCA event together. You did a great job and everyone is most appreciative.

I used Scott's event as an excuse to celebrate my 60th birthday.  As I write this I'm sitting in the Fairway Cottage adjacent to the Paraparaumu Golf Club on the New Zealand leg of my adventure. I wouldn't be here enjoying this beautiful environment if it were not for Scott. I can't thank you enough... youngster!

This has so far been one if the best and one if the worst golf trips of my life.

The best:
 - The courses were fabulous and even better than I expected.
 - Matthew Mollica... what a prince of a fellow Matthew is... the ultimate goodwill ambassador!
 - David Elvins... David is the poster boy for the congenial Aussie... nothing is a problem, nothing too much trouble. I'm looking forward to seeing David in New York and repaying some of his hospitality.
 - Brett Morrisey... Mr. Cool... the soft spoken baker... he's the guy most of the young GCA'ers want to grow up to be!
 - Finally meeting the illusive Mrs. Warren.
 - Sharing accommodations with Sven Nilsen and Patrick Kiser... no better roommates on the planet.
 - Traveling half-way round the world with Patrick... one of the genuine nice guys...  Merci pour tout. J'ai passé un bon moment, my friend!
 - Getting the Tepper Tour of San Francisco... what a way to spend a day... the view from the 17th at Lincoln Park and a great fish dinner in an old school San Fran restaurant with a great guy... doesn't get much better.

The worst:
Everyone prays for good weather and good health when they plan an excursion like this one. Well we had good weather, but I struck out with good health. I remember everything about the Australian portion of my trip  from the day I arrived on Saturday, February 26 until we played Royal Melbourne West on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 1. I remember about 1/2 of playing Yarra Yarra on Wednesday the 2nd and Metropolitan on Thursday morning. Somewhere between RM and Yarra Yarra I started coming down with a virus... one of those nasty, dizzy headed, I hurt all over and feel like total shit viruses. As a result, I hardly remember anything of my flight to Tasmania, the two rounds I played on Friday at Barnbougle Dunes, or the morning round at Lost Farm. I started to come out of my funk on Saturday afternoon and by Sunday I was out of the woods. But, even as I sit here and write this on Wednesday, March 9 I'm still not back to normal. I had to look through Scott's pairings sheet to remember who I was on the golf course with on Friday and Saturday. I guess if you have to be sick Barnbougle Dunes is a great place to be... but, don't try to hit a golf ball... the two don't mix. As I told Scott... I was way too sick to play golf on Friday, but I didn't travel 15,000 miles to lay in bed. So, I got up and staggered down the fairways. Although I'm glad a saw the courses, I don't think I made the correct decision as it wasn't any fun for me or anyone around me. I'll know better next time!

Here's hoping for more feedback on the courses.   Especially interested in hearing more about the similarities/differences between the two Barnbougle courses.
