Not Petite, But Still Sweet
« on: November 16, 2010, 07:46:34 PM »

This is a photo of the 16th at the Women's National Golf and Tennis Club in Glen Head L.I., ca. 1924.  The 'high iron shot' that Marion Hollins said was needed must have been quite a feat back then. Of course, she was capable of driving the ball a couple of hundred yards so I guess the best women of the day could conquer this hole. Pretty amazing green/site.

"The sixteenth is a short hole of one hundred and sixty-five yards, greatly resembling the twelfth at St. George's, on Long Island, and also the twelfth at Garden City—with the exception that you can see the bunker and green, something you cannot do at the Garden City course. The fairway is surrounded by hills and calls for a high iron shot from an elevation, with a commanding trap intervening almost mid-way down the fairway."

Jim,

Thats  a beautiful photo.  Is  it from Golf Illustrated in the 1920s ?

Mark,
Yes, it was part of a Carter's Seed Co. advertisement.

She makes the comparison to the 12th at St.Georges. If Joe Bausch has the routings correct then that would be the present day 9th.
I wonder if the two are similar, or perhaps this hole is a better match to one of the other 3s at St. Georges.

It would seem to me that this hole has more in common with either 15 or 17 at ST. George. The 17th has a very shallow green with a false front and a steep hill in the front. The sides and back are also protected by hills and a bunker. In the same vein, the slope of 15 will deflect short shots down a hill short of the green into a bunker.

I really like how some of those old pictures place people.  I presume the purpose was to give a sense of scale of the ground contours.

I almost know it isn't, but ....... that chap in the foreground has the same pose that MacKenzie had.

The rugged, rough-around-the-edges nature of this hole is very appealing to me.

I wonder if the guys in the photo are trying to figure out how where else they can move rain water off the green so that the washout doesn't re-occur.

Have you checked the ship manifests?   ;D  It does look like the old boy as seen in the old B&W Cypress Point photos.

The first photo (from the Carter's Seeds advertisement):

Here's the hole in playing form:

Less fierce, still a good looking hole, but I liked it better with less sand/deeper surrounds.
Looks like they solved the drainage problem by lowereing the right edge of the green.
