That's a big chunk of change...but I'm assuming it includes alot of real estate? Otherwise 35MM Euro (~$42MM US?) for an existing club is pricey.

Not sure why it would allow for any more major events though.

Valderrama has slipped rather in the golfing public's consciousness, and this week's event is not really that exciting, more like the Fall Finish than the FedEx Cup, if you ask me. Maybe Greg will help attract something bigger back.

There is a major push from Spain to hold the 2018 Ryder Cup in Madrid. Fellow GCA-er Robin Hiseman is designing a new course to be built with the intent of hosting the event.

This story has been doing the rounds for several weeks - I covered it earlier in the month. The transactions hasn't closed yet, I don't think, or if it has it hasn't surfaced, and I've not been able to get to the bottom of why the Patinos are selling. The other complication is what, if anything, is happening in respect of the new course that is supposed to be built over the hillside at Castellar de la Frontera. We shall see.

Interesting, first I've heard of this. I'm sure the numbers would need to work for GN to make him shell out the money but I do wonder what he has in store for it. What will GN the designer do with someone elses design ? Could he resist touching it even if it didn't make sense to make some tweaks ?

As far as I know, sale just covers the golf course, no Real Estate attached. Both courses included, the existing one and the Castellar project.

People over here (Spain) have mentioned that the reason for the sale is that the current owners have had some bad real estate investments and need to sell out.

The price does seem quite steep, especially if you take into account that the current membership has a 40+ year lease agreement on the property and therefore not much leeway exists to operate it.

It comes with nothing. Ownership of Valderrama golf course + permits for an additional course some 15min away from Valderrama.

Only played it once and thought some of the par 4's were wonderful, the par 3's were good/strong but maybe not that imaginative. The par 5's however I thought let the course down. 3 out of 4 were worse than poor including the infamous 17th, so yes I think it needs attention. I was just wondering if Norman would be tempted to chuck out the good with the bad and redo the whole lot.

I read 'oor local loons' (Paul Lawrie) diary, and he is NEVER critical of the courses that he plays .

This week speaking on Valderrama he says this :

The course is in fantastic condition but it is still the most frustrating course in the world to play as trees over hang fairways and greens.   You have to hit it in a certain position on pretty much every hole...which is a challenge.

No architect could look at that terrain and not think he could improve it.

Look for the Norman design team to blow it up and start over.
