Island Green CC in Philly to close...or not?
« on: October 29, 2010, 10:01:41 AM »
Buried in this business article about Teva Pharmaceuticals is a mention that Island Green, a public course that opened in 2001 in the city limits designed by Jim Blaukovitch , will close:

Wow, I missed that one Steve.  I'm all for jobs, but do wish that this one did not have to come at the expense of a nice public option in the area.

A couple of winters ago Kyle Harris and I played it.  Here is my photo album of the course:

What a pity.

Seriously, Island Green represents a better option for the area, especially considering some of the neighbors. My only gripe about the place had been they were usually a bit overpriced.

Unfortuante to see it go.  As Kyle put it, its a good one for the area.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this course built on a former industrial site?

Steve:

May I ask you why you chose a photo of Gulfstream's clubhouse as your regular post photo?  ;)

Tom,

I chose the Gulfstream club house becasuse I like it. How many club houses are there that are on the Atlantic Ocean?

I'm going to change my  icon  more often and insert pics of club houses that I like.

Joe,
Pretty sad to see it go. A few questions I have are what is to be done with the artificial turf from the 400 hundred yard long double-ended driving range. The range was located over the footprint of a one million SF bomb-proof structure that used to manufacture munitions for the war effort and later railroad cars. The roof was dropped and the slab was cracked to permit drainage through it. It was then topped and turfed for the range.
It was a heck of a brownfield clean-up project for the engineering firm.
Also we built a model of the course at 1"=100'. I wonder if Jim Blaukovitch can get it back, if he doesn't already have it? The model would just fit in the back of his Ford Ranger pick-up.
