I got a tour of Punta Espada last week while looking at a new site we've signed up for.  Overall, I was very impressed with it ... Hole by hole it is way ahead of Cabo del Sol up until the last three.  I was amazed to see those greens so close to the water's edge and to sea

Interesting commentary. How much elevation change at Punta Espada?

Greg,

I would guess the highest point on Punta Espada is maybe 40 feet above sea level ... There is a dramatic rocky shelf which several holes play alongside, either on top or just underneath, plus it is a great background for the par 4 fifth hole.  But the coastal holes are lower to the water than yours, maybe only 8 to 15 feet above sea level.  I'm sure, too, that the golf course looks less crowded than yours because the development is nowhere close to built out.

I know Brian McCallen had wonderful things to say about it though I have always thought of golf along that part of the Dominican coast somewhat "florida-like" with the coral /rock coast. CDS has probaly 6 greensite less than 20 feet above sea level with half of those around 15 or so. The new holes are lower than one might logically build them but well worth the headaches that come with that.

Jim, the picture is the 18th holes at Corales.

Tom, Corales held up pretty good.  Just a little damage on holes 8 and 9.  Next time you are down here in the DR, we should get together and i will show you around Corales and maybe other courses in the area.

Gents,

It appears my family and I will be going the the Dominican Republic in early June for 2 weeks.  My wife has said I can play 2 or 3 rounds of golf.  We will be staying 5 miles from the Punta Cana airport I really don't want to be driving all over the place to play these rounds.  After doing some minor research it appears that the following courses are near the main strip.  Are my first 3 choice somewhat close to one another and do my choices make sense?  Should I skip any of these and replace with any other courses?

1st choice - Punta Espada
2nd choice - Corales
3rd choice - La Cana
(Teeth of the Dog) I understand that this is an amazing course but I don't think I will have the time to make it happen.

The prices I'm getting online through golfpuntacana.com offer the following prices

$720 for Punta Espada and Corales or $885 for punta Espada, Corales, and la Cana.  Can I get a better rate somewhere else.  I understand that these are really expensive rounds which is not the norm for me but I plan to live it up while on vacation.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bob-
Where are you staying?  For Punta Espada, at least, they have a rate for people staying inside Cap Cana, and they also have a twilight rate.  I've also heard that they have a different rate for guests of resorts that have their own golf courses.

FWIW, I played Punta Espada twice last week and thought it was really good.

Bob--

I was down there a little less than a month ago and the courses were all in excellent condition.

The drive to Casa de Campo from Punta Cana is shockingly easy now.  From the traffic circle in Punta Cana, it's about 40 minutes and entirely super highway almost to the gate of Casa de Campo.  There is a toll of 150 pesos each way.  The roads are surprisingly good so long as you stay out of Bavaro with it's ever present speed bumps.

As far as the price of golf goes.... you should be able to get on La Cana in the $150-200 range.   Punta Espada and Corrales will run you over $300 but I would call the golf shop when you get there as times should be available.  Corrales is capped at 48 rounds a day and the course is in impeccable condition as is Punta Espada.  Keep in mind, that you will have to take a caddie at Punta Espada and Corrales, which is included in the fee but there will be a $30-40 tip involved.

I'm in Punta Cana with family this week - have played La Cana with my kids twice and loved it - it is $175 for 18 holes, vs. ~$275 at Punta Espada and Casa de Campo, and ~$350 at Corales - I'm not generally frugal when it comes to golf, but no way I'm paying an extra $300+ for the three of us when La Cana is such a perfect resort course - 3 terrific nines, VERY wide fairways, 3-club wind each of the last two days etc. - a pleasant surprise!

What's happened to Roco Ki, after three years?  I haven't heard it mentioned anywhere for a while, and I'd forgotten about the damage Chris Munoz talked about in this thread.

Tom:
Roko Ki is currently closed; I believe that's been the case since sometime in 2011.

just an update about how the golf in the Dom Rep is currently this season.  golf rounds are up and increasing.  Puntacana airport recieves over 70-75 percent of the tourists who come into the country.  and with each year that goes by more of the tourists are golfers.

The golf courses to play when one is down here in the puntacana area is Corales, Punta Espada and la cana in that order.  if one stays at the Westin tortuga bay or private villas on the puntacana resorts, the golf rates area little bit lower and there are better deals.  if one decides to stay off property, check out golfpuntacana.com

as for Roco Ki.  the bank still owns it.  I have heard that there are several people interested, but havent pulled the plug yet.  my thoughts on the golf course everyone knows about.  it is not a resort golf course.  needs to be blown up and start all over again.

Casa de campo is 30 minutes away, with the Coral highway.  can really make for a great day trip and maybe play 36 holes.  Met Pete Dye on xmas eve, as Pb Dye showed Pete around Hacienda and Pete stopped by to chat at Corales.  What a guy.  so sharp and has tons of stories to tell.  A really classy guy and gentleman.

Chris:
Glad to hear things are on the upswing.  Sorry I didn't connect with you when I was down there.
