Ran's Next 50
« on: September 12, 2010, 02:19:53 PM »
Looking at Ran's Next 50 below it struck me how few of the N American courses I really want to see compared to those of ROW.  When I get right down to it, Wolf Point is the only NA course listed that really has me interested.  On the flip side, Barnbougle, Machrie Walton Heath New, Lost Farms & Fontainebleau are all ones I very much want to see.  I guess I sort of found this surprising to have such a short list of want to sees from among so many wonderful courses.  How bout you folks?

Ciao

Sean,

In addition to Wolf Point on the North American side I'd add Old Sandwich, Foresgate, Greenbriar, Austin Golf Club, Desert Forest, Newport CC and Rock Creek CC.  Obviously Lost Farm and Barnbougle should be near the top of everyone's list....

Well Ran has seen a few decent one's already as profiled in the Courses by Country  :D

The Top5 listed in the ROW certainly hold more interest to me

I suppose the main reason why the ROW looks more appealing is that Ran has already profiled many of the most renowned courses in the US. About half the courses Ran has profiled are in the US.

The ROW list would be even more appealing is if he included a number of prominent courses that are conspicuous by their absence. Taking Ireland as a quick example, he hasn't profiled Ballybunion or Portmarnock, nor are they in the Next ROW list. The same goes for Scotland (Turnberry, Carnoustie, Muirfield), England (Birkdale, Sunningdale, etc.).

Sean,

I have to agree with you.  I'd cite no more than 25 (and that's being generous) of the USA courses as ones I'd like to play, that would invigorate and surprise me, that I'd feel privileged to traverse.

In complete contrast, I'd have to say that not a single one of the ROW courses on the list disinterests me.

I guess the message is, it's new golf and it excites me.  The opinion that either list is lacking sits with me as a wee bit jaded and in need of a good spiritual massage.  Perhaps a reminder of why golf is so inspiring.

Donal:

The courses you name are not on Ran's next 25 list because in most cases, maybe in all, he has already played them.  It is only a lack of taste [or fear of being heckled for disliking some of them] that keeps him from writing them up.

Bogey

Sure I am interested, but what I getting at is REALLY interested.  Someplace I can see myself actually taking up an invite to play when it isn't terribly convenient to do so.  Shit, there are countless places I would be more than happy to foozle a few on if in the neighbourhood.  Besides, you have to take it easy on me.  Coming from the Motor City it took me years to get over my angular fears brought on by the various whales built in the local factories.  I am not at a stage in my life where I can turn it off and on man.  Jeepers, I have only just now stopped rubbing my eyes in disbelief of the Michigan win over that school in Indiana.  Let me get things back in order.  That said, I am sure once Michigan has finished its section of the schedule which includes St Mary's School for Blind & Crippled Six Year Old Girls and of course the ever so proud Under Water Basket Weaving Polytechnic that all will feel righteo.

So if Ran publishes a list of the next 50 he wants to play its ok... but if others publish the list, its trolling for access? ;)

I'm stunned that I've played a dozen of his list.

I would not be stunned if he's played my entire list.... ;D

I love the fact that some of the list is made up of some obscure clubs.

Tom,

I'm sure Ran must have thick enough skin to handle the heckling. I would be very interested to hear his opinion on Ballybunion and Portmarnock in particular. Portmarnock polarizes opinion in a similar way as Muirfield, and Ballybunion has a few holes that are less than perfect in my opinion.

I notice he has posted his review of Falsterbo. It looks stunning.

Donal,

Ran will only post writeups of courses he likes, I think he follows the old adage if you don't have any nice to say... then don't say anything.

I think that's definitely true,  but also a course has more chance of a review if it's from a new country....this is golfclubatlas and I think Ran wants as many countries represented as possible.

It takes a lot of time to write these reviews so I wouldn't  interpret the lack of a review as necessarily a thumbs down for the course... for example I know he likes Haagsche and De Pan at least as much as Kennemer.

What struck me instantly about this list was the inclusion of Ellerston. My understanding was that it's pretty much the hardest golf course in the world to get on...

If he does get on, will they let him take photos?

Sean,

Thank you for the welcome

I was trying to spark some North American interest! Those are all ROW courses, surely there could be better "next 50" lists for NA, but I don't see how some of those courses are of no interest

Dedham is gravy!!!!!!!

I am no way saying they aren't of interest, but you missed the course which attracts me the most on Ran's Next 50 in N America - Wolf Point.

Beautiful. Is he a GCAer??? A proper review of that place would be a very nice trophy for the site...

Brian he's not a GCAer but is a good bloke.  He was the superintendent at Royal Perth a few years ago and moved onto to bigger and better things. For me to get to Ellerston its a four plane flight and four hour plus drive, but hoping to do that next year if possible
