DG Features I Would Like To See Added To This Forum
« on: August 16, 2010, 11:09:01 AM »
There are several features built into the software that runs this forum that I would like to see turned on. IMO these features would enhance the site. All it takes to turn on these features is the click of a button by an Administrator:

Enable Buddy Lists - this to allows members to have their own buddy list.

Enable Polls - If we had the ability to vote on the quality or interest level of threads it would reward the good ones and keep people from wasting their time on the bad ones. If we had the ability to reward quality threads by allowing members to cast a vote for them the cream would definitely rise to the top.

Disable Post Counts & Status - I wish Ran would do away with the feature that shows the post count and "ranks" the participants with a status designation. This forum should not in any way reward quantity instead of quality.

Another feature available in the SMF software that, on the surface, might be useful:

Karma Mode - Karma is a feature that shows the popularity of a member. Members, if allowed, can 'applaud' or 'smite' other members, which is how their popularity is calculated. The following options are available within this setting:
  • Disable karma - will disable the use of this feature. (Current Setting)
  • Enable karma total - will only show the total of points received.
  • Enable karma positive/negative - will show the positive points as well as the negative points.
  • Set the minimum posts needed to modify karma - The number of posts needed to have a "karma".
  • Set wait time in hours - The time between smites or applauds.
  • Restrict administrators to wait time - If administrators have to wait for the time above as well.
  • Karma label - Karma label that will be used.
  • Karma applaud label - he label of the applaud link.
  • Karma smite label - The label of the smite link.

Haven't you wished you had the ability to "applaud" or "smite" certain members? I know I have.  ;)

It would also be great to be able to click on a poster's profile and go back through their old posts. By all means let those who want to go in and disable this if they like, but it would be a huge help generally.

Mr. Whitaker,

This thread is decidedly Off Topic ;D

In any event, I like the first suggestions but not the last.  I think the last would be fun and beneficial in an environment with a smaller membership that had built a certain level of trust and knowledge about each other.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

Jason - I agree that this is probably not a good forum for the Karma Mode... just thought it was an interesting feature. It would be fun though, wouldn't it? I would like to see "Polls" turned on and "Post Count" turned off.

Scott - I agree that it would helpful to have the ability to look through the old posts of individuals turned back on. That feature was enabled before the site was remodeled. There was never any explanation as to why it was turned off.

Sorry,

The last thing we need is "group think". IMO there is too much conventional wisdom on here. Which is neither conventional, i.e., conforming to reality, nor wise.

That's my opinion, and I doubt I get much karma for it.

Karma mode can only lead to bad karma, imho.

Not so sure on everything else. Sometimes I look at number of posts to get a gauge on the poster, or even to differentiate between posters (some names are similar, it helps to remind who's who). Buddy lists might propagate cliques, not necessarily a good thing. Not sure about the polls, either, polls in general aren't particularly meaningful.

But these are interesting thoughts, anyway, I'd like to read more people's thoughts on them.

I used this feature often until in was disabled in the latest software change..

I'd like to see a limit put on the number of new topics allowed each day; 10 is a managable number. It's very time consuming reading through all the new topics each day.

I'd also to see the bumping of old topics encouraged. At present, there is a warning when you attempt to post on a topic more than 120 days old. I'd recommend removing the warning, but add a icon of some sort indicating that this new post in on an old topic.

Michael W.

If you want to smite them anonymously, shame on you.

If you want to smite them with identification, that's what personal messages are for.

I'm in line with Garland and the others (known as et and al) on the Karma ish.

Forget the karma; can we somehow get scrollbars (as we had prior the salmon takeover of the DG) back underneath each and every single picture, so we can restore some width to this place? Absolutely a golf-architecture-related improvement. ;D

Since you asked, no. But if you publicly admit that State is an inferior institution I may well reconsider :)
