"I have done 280, Cal 1 through SF many times and have not had any significant delay. But then, I would be avoiding rush hours."

Kinda hard to do much sightseeing in the middle of the night, isn't it Garland?

 ;D

Hey in the end either way works.  I remain convinced that particularly coming from Monterey, getting out to I-5 and going that way would get one there the fastest... but yes, 101 is clearly a much nicer drive.  So again it all turns on how much time they have and what their goals are.  There is a lot to see - and several courses to play - if one wanted to do it that way.  But all time doing that is time taken away from potential rounds at Bandon, so choose with eyes open.  One does not want to miss those rounds.

As for Santa Teresa, those past champions are a true let-down these days.

Thanks for all the replies guys.  I appreciate the info.

Private courses are an option also. I am in the design business so I may be able to pull some strings for certain courses.

Ill reply a little more once I knock out some work this morning, thanks again guys!!

Brandon -

The private courses most likely worth seeing/playing in the SF Bay Area are:

San Francisco GC
California GC
Olympic Club Lake
Meadow Club
Mayacama

And following Sir Thomas of Huckaby's driving directions won't get you there.  ;D

Pointedly ignoring the visitor to our area who claims to know it better than the locals.

That is indeed a list of top private courses that David posted.  There are others worth seeing, for sure... but that's a fine priority list.

Will you have time to play other courses in Monterey?

If so, there are some fine choices there as well.

FINE choices.

I will have time to play more courses in Monterey if needed. our schedule is wide open. It is me and a buddy, and there is nothing set in stone yet. The trip timeline is looking like 2011-2012. What time of year do you guys reccomend?

Also, any locals interested in playing with us, there will only be two. Could always reciprocate with South Florida golf and possibly elsewhere. . . .

 8) get to bandon asap, do not stop anywhere but for food and gas, take whatever highway except the coastal 1 on your approach.. you can play ordinary courses anytime ..

The problem for using US101 from Monterey to Bandon is the drive through San Francisco. Depends on what time you plan to start from Monterey. You mentioned a 10 day trip, how many days for the trip north? of the courses mentioned that I have played they woulod be ranked 1-Pasatiempo; 2- Eagle Point; 3-Centennial. If travelling I-5 Sevilano Links is less than a mile off the freeway. Yocha d'He is a bit off the I-505. On the general US101 route north of SF I've played the Meadow Club, which far outweights Peacock Gap (extreme greens). Bodega Bay is convenient and Sea Ranch out of the way, have played neither.

Don't go through SF.  Take 101 to 880 to 580 across the Richmond San Rafael bridge and back on 101 then you miss SF and all the street driving through there.  Actually if you are coming from Pasatiempo that would be Highway 17 to 880 (same road just changes numbers).

If you insist on going through SF, take 17 to 85 to 280 to 19th Avenue all the way through the city (just keep following the Golden Gate Bridge signs in the city).  Still street driving, but 19th ave is better than downtown.

Another possibility would be take Highway 1 out of Santa Cruz and stop and play at Half Moon Bay.  I like the links course for fun.  The old course is definitely tougher and goes through housing.

If you are going up 101, just make sure you don't do hit 101 north of the city during afternoon rush hour.  You'll crawl all they way past Santa Rosa which is a long haul.
