Myself and a buddy are going to be taking a trip to play pebble and then head up to bandon. Do you guys have any advice on other courses that are cant miss?? The only other course on the dockett right now is Pasatiempo. Total trip is going to be around 10 days. Any sites or road food that is cant miss?

If you are looking for high quality, daily fee, public access golf north of San Francisco to the Oregon border, the pickings are pretty slim.  I am not sure there are any "must play" courses worthy of a detour. I think most on this board would encourage you to get to Bandon the sooner the better.

Having been to Fall River Mills... to say it's "off highway 5" is like saying Monterey is "just down the street from San Francisco."  Everything is relative true, but it's at least 60 miles on a small highway... as I recall it was at least an hour's drive from I-5.

That being said, David is correct about the rest - get thyself to Bandon pronto - no need to dilly-dally along the way.  If you MUST play some golf, Messrs. Benham and Pieracci and I had a fun diversion from our drive up there at a 9 hole course called Wild Wings in Woodland, which was right off I-505, which you will take if you are going north from Pebble Beach (and sane).  But this just meant a LATE night arrival near Bandon rather than a late one.

Sounds like you Californians are dependent on freeways. Why the mention of "Hiway 5" which I assume is I-5 and the mention of I-505.

101 has to be a better drive. Napa/Sonoma Valleys close by, Valley of the Giants nearby if you choose. Coast Redwood National Park. Southern Oregon Coast beginning at Brookings makes all those silly statements about coast meeting sea at Monterrey sound just plain ignorant.

If the goal is to sight-see and one has unlimited time, then by all means, take 101 (and the required parts of 1).  You will see all that you mention.  Hell, divert over to Crater Lake - that shouldn't be missed either.

You will of course effectively double the length (in time) of your trip, if not more than that.

The assumption here - no, make that the stated fact, in what I said anyway - is to get to Bandon quickly.

And for that, one takes the 4 lane minimum, speed limit 70, mostly straight interstates over the two-lane, twisty, 55 limit but you're lucky if you average 35, state and US highways.

Another option is the relatively new Sevillano Links at Rolling Hills Casino, off Highway 5 between Willows & Red Bluff. There may be some posts on the board about it, but I have not played it.

I just used Google Maps to get directions from Pebble Beach to Bandon.  I'm not sure any of their folks actually drove it.

Via I-5, 634 miles, 11 hours

Via 101, 583 miles............11 hours    

Has anybody done it both ways?

There is quite a lot of 101 there that might as well be an interstate.  The I-5 cross over to the coast, plus the extra miles, might just about offset the windy roads from Crescent City to Bandon.  Definitely a prettier drive up the coast but no golf that I can think of but Sea Ranch.

Mapquest gives the shortest fastest route from San Jose to Bandon as 101. You mis-characterize the road considerably. 101 is 4 lane through most of CA. It is two lane in OR, but mostly straight.

I have done it both ways... not all the way to Bandon using 101, but close enough.

Google Maps and Mapquest assume one follows the speed limits on I-5, and gets to go the speed limit the whole way using 101.  It also does not factor in the traffic one is likely to have all the way from Monterey until well north of San Francisco using 101 (which he would avoid if he headed out to I-5 as soon as possible).  None of this exactly jives with reality.

Remember also Garland factored in many sight-seeing opportunities... one would assume he does not mean as one drives by.

So I stand by my assessment.

I have driven all these roads too. The slowest, narrowest stretch is probably coming in from I-5 to Bandon. The road in Northern CA is much improved in recent years over what it used to be.

Your hyperbole about Crater Lake is nothing more than just that, an exaggeration. The sights I mentioned (except Napa Valley) are only a few minutes out of the way, or right on the highway.

Over watered, playing some through housing development. But some good holes. You might want to check with Pete Pittock who has played Centennial nearby. It seems to be the favorite of the two from what I have heard.

I suspect your real meaning is that there is more insulation from the law in speeding amongst a denser speeding population.

Play Pebble, Pasatiempo and then if the private options aren't options go directly to Bandon in one shot.  Take I-5, plan on 9 hours.  It's not a bad drive at all.  

A day and night in Napa / Sonoma is not a bad pitstop if you have the time and will.

I've driven both routes. It's a no-brainer- take 101. It's the most direct route and a pleasant drive and quicker in my experience. Also, make a beeline to Bandon. You want to spend your time there. We expect a full report.

If travelling I-5 Sevilano Links is less than a mile off the freeway. Yocha d'He is a bit off the I-505. On the general US101 route north of SF I've played the Meadow Club, which far outweights Peacock Gap (extreme greens). Bodega Bay is convenient and Sea Ranch out of the way, have played neither.

Is this the first time a John Daly signature course has been recommended on this website?

I have done 280, Cal 1 through SF many times and have not had any significant delay. But then, I would be avoiding rush hours.
