I need some Liverpool suggestions
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:18:39 AM »
Could use some suggestions:
We have a Saturday morning open and are staying very close to Birkdale the night before

We have made arrangements to see both Birkdale and Hoylake on Friday.
We can not go see Lytham because they have a major event that week-end and will not even let us walk.

We are looking for other suggestions in the area that we can either walk or play early saturday morning.
We fly out later that day from Manchester Airoprt.

Thanks for the help

Ian

Formby, Hillside and Southport and Ainsdale are the three that come to mind immediately.  I'm sure there are other great ones in the area as well.  I believe Formby and Hillside are very accessible from Liverpool by train.

Of course, you could always do my Prestwick trip and fly out of Prestwick International instead! ;D

Formby is a really interesting course from an architectural perspective.  A links in a pine forest for a good part of it.  Some newer holes that have added to the quality of the course, and some really good land forms.  It would be my first choice.

Southport and Ainsdale is an interesting course that technology has not helped.  Really cool Par 3 first hole.  There is a hole on the back - 15? - that was one of the most famous holes in GB in its day.  The second shot is blind and over a dune with sleepers set in the face.  Still interesting but driving distances have not done it any favours.

Have not been to Hillside but did see it from S&A, looks good.  All are quite close to Birkdale.

Make sure you see the links land all around that area, there is room to build 10 or 20 more links courses.  The environmentalists and market conditions might provide a challenge of course!

For me, hands down Formby.  If you are feeling adventerous, Wallasey is worth seeing.  I wouild also suggest Prestbury - a cool Colt course quite close to the airport.  I would consider Cavendish.  Like Wallasey, its out of the way a bit, but I think you would be well rewarded.

Actually we're closer to Birkdale than Liverpool. Would any of these courses allow visitors on a Saturday morning? Any suggestions?

I think you'd need a host to get on Formby on a Saturday morning; if you could find one, that would be my choice. Prestbury is a good call though - it is one of the best documented of Colt's courses, and it's very close to Manchester airport.

Hillside's next to Birkdale. Formby is just down the road and West Lancs is not much further south ?

Assuming you are already playing one or more rounds at Hoylake, Wallasey is the next choice.  1930 Open Championship, en route to the Grand Slam / Impregnable Quadrilateral.

I would be whispering the name"Robert Thompson" very quietly, or not at all, in  Liverpool.

I really like Southport and Ainsdale.  It used to have a small Ryder Cup museum as it has held it twice.  Have a look at the website and the photos of the course.  It has some wonderful bunkering and some very nice greensites.  If you let them know who you are Ian I am sure they will be very accommodating. I had a wonderful afternoon there with the Secretary many, many years ago.

They are a small club but very proud without being stuffy about it.  It is a great short golf course that is a lot of fun to play.  One of my favourite courses in the the North West. I used to live in a caravan in Ormskirk when I was 18 which is a 15 minute drive to Southport.  Lots of good memories from that area.

I also used to live across the road from Lytham golf course and still have not played it!!

Robert/Ian - You are going to be very lucky to get on anywhere of interest without a member host, the Beatles Tour, Crazy Golf at Southport or The Big One at Blackpool maybe your only options.

Before settling on my June! London! itinerary I was looking at a possible trip to the area you're describing in May. I had no luck at all finding Saturday access on the caliber of courses you mention. That was one particular Saturday but I suspect it is a general problem especially as summer approaches.

Gary,

It's just the two of us.
I think we are looking at walking some holes as opposed to playing them.

Everyone,

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have the two or three I would like to contact and request an opportunity to walk.
I learn more this way.

Thanks a lot!

Ian
