Royal County Down in Pictures
« on: March 31, 2010, 12:00:44 PM »
I had the pleasure of playing Royal County Down for the first time last July.  What a fantastic place!  Here are some of my favorite pictures of the day.  Enjoy.

The par 5 1st green at dawn.

The drive at the par 4 3rd hole.

The downhill par 3 4th hole.

Behind the par 4 8th green.

The drive at the par 4 9th hole.

The par 4 12th hole.

The short par 4 16th hole.

Thanks Jim

Reminds me of my teenage years at RCD in the 1960's. After looking at your photos those days do not seem that long ago - thanks for that - great photos

Thanks

Thanks for sharing Jim.  RCD is a very special place.  Of the courses I've played this far, RCD is the best and my favorite.

What day were you there?  I, too, played it for the first time last July.  Probably not the same day -- your weather looks better than torrential downpour with serious gusts.   :-\

Carl -

I played RCD on July 6, I believe.  The weather was wonderful; light wind, sunny most of the way around.  The only downer on the day was the airline had lost my clubs so I had to play with a rental set.  That was awful.  Fortunately, they got the clubs back to me for my next round, which was Portrush.

Ron -

I agree, RCD is my favorite course, of the ones I've seen.

Jim - I also had the good fortune of being paired with Anne Quast Sander at RCD.  She is women's golf's answer to Bobby Jones having won countless USGA and British Amateur championships.  I believe she was 70 years old when we played together at RCD and she still had some serious game.  Very impressive to watch.

I love the drive at 9 with The Sleive Donard in the back and the mountain. WOW...one of the best in all of golf.

Jim

As I said previously your photos have brought back the memories. One great part of playing RCD was after a warm game of golf we met up with our friends and girlfriends and went up to the large park. Following a stream up the hills until we arrived at a natural pool deep enough to jump in. In the hot summer months it was a great way to relax after a game but that water was cold.

Another time we saw a speed boat break apart on a high wave, hearing the the sound of the prop out of the water, then nothing was so strange.  Never a dull moment at RCD.

Presume the park is still there, must get back someday.

8 is one of the holes at RCD that may not get enough credit. Perhaps because its between the fantastic 7 and all world 9?

I still think the 4th is one of the best par 3's I've ever played.

The best view on the course isn't the ninth. It's when you look back in the middle of the first fairway and the mountain hits you in the face.

Tom, great point. My first time there, my father and I were walking backwards on one not really realizing it and our caddy commented that all first timers walk the first three holes backwards!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane - there are few better links experiences than that on offer at RCD

How did you find the blind drives ?

Kevin -

I had heard a lot about the number of blind drives before playing RCD, so I had prepared myself mentally to accept it.  Admittedly, multiple blind shots during a round is not something I prefer.  But, the white marker rocks do give you a line, and the golf course and setting are so glorious, that I really didn't mind the blindness.

I will say RCD is the most demanding golf course off the tee I've ever seen.  During my round, the wind was a half club, maybe a club at most.  I cannot imagine playing that course in a high wind.

Thanks Jim

I can't recall that eight green being that small, but it was one of my favorite holes on the course, and that pic of the green points to a reason why.  I also loved the 7th, 145 yards of sheer terror, which I made no better than 6 on in two tries.

On the second occasion I treated a citizen of Northern Ireland/business associate to a day at RCD.  As we came over the dune from the 9th tee to see that fairway below and the mountain ahead, he was stunned, and he said "Nothing prepares you for that."  One of my favorite moments ever as a golf host!

Jim:

It has been a number of years since I have been to RCD.  Your photos bring back fond memories.

I have not played the new 16th hole, but from your photo it looks like it fits in quite well.  How does it play?  Did you ever play the old 16th and, if so, do you think the new hole is an improvement?

Your comment about RCD being the most demanding course you have seen off the tee is interesting, and brings to my mind the other "biggie" in Northern Ireland, Royal Portrush.  For whatever reason I always think of RP as being tougher off the tee than RCD and, for that matter, a tougher overall test of golf.   I have always viewed RCD as more "beauty" than "beast", but when I think back on my rounds at RCD it is hard to recall a round where I scored anywhere near my handicap.  On the other hand, while I always think of RP being more beast than beauty, I do recall a few good scoring rounds there.

In any event, that is probably what makes RCD so great - stunningly beautiful yet a great test of golf.

Cheers.

Mike

Mike -

I had not played RCD before, so obviously I had not played the old 16th.  I was actually unaware the 16th had been altered from the original until I read that on GCA in another thread.  IMHO, the new 16th fits in seemlessly with the other holes, and obviously, while playing it, I couldn't detect it was not original to the layout.  I think it's a great golf hole, a really tempting short par 4.  At 337 yards from the back, with the right wind conditions, a player may want to have a go at the green with driver.  Of course, that brings a lot of trouble into play, including those nasty bunkers.  If not the driver, you could play the hole off the tee with many other clubs, even a mid-iron.

The options on the tee make it a fun golf hole, and a good birdie opportunity late in the round.

Regarding Portrush, I had my best round there, in a 3 to 4 club wind.  It may have been the best driving day of my life, but I felt like there was more room off most of the tees than at RCD.  I could be wrong there, since I only saw each course once.  The biggest difference was at Portrush, the rough off the fairway allowed you to find the ball, and then play it.  At RCD, the rough was nasty deep and if you found your ball, it was more or less a punch out.  I felt like I could let it go a bit more at RP.

I thought RP may have been the fairest test of golf I experienced while in Ireland/N. Ireland.

Rory - you are spot on about #8, it is an incredible hole.  If #'s 7-9 were actually 16-18, it would be the best 3 finishing holes in the world in my opinion.

Jim, thanks for sharing the pictures....incredible.  Brings back many awesome memories from a 36 hole day there in 2008...how come you couldn't get your boy J. Colton over there with you?

But are 7-9 at RCD the best stretch of holes 7-9 in the world? What about Pebble?

What about flipping the front and back?  Is that possible?

great photos - my favorite course on the planet - some people have other courses that they like better- but has to be in the top 10 on anyone's list who appreciate golf architecture.
agree 8 is awesome - but there are so many great holes there - i love 9 and 4 is fantastic as well
last time there we did a -re-route on our second round of the day -  - local caddy knowledge - to try something different - played 1-8 - skipped over to 12 tee -short walk - played 12-18 then finished wiith 10,11, 9  - how about those two finishing holes - as good as it gets
