a 7,000 mile trip for the sand?
« on: February 10, 2010, 10:17:53 PM »
Golf Digest reports:"The sand for Greg Norman's Earth Course, the venue for the Dubai World [ ::)] Championship, was transported 7,000 miles from North Carolina."

why would they do that?

seems like a poster child for why golf is so expensive
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

As a native Tarheel I can say the sand is quite good ;D, but to export it to of all places the Middle East?  Seriously, this has to be a publicity stunt/marketing nonsense...  Last time I checked Dubai has plenty of sand, especially the sand they were going to use for all those empty buildings they were going to build until they ran out money.

You need high quality American made sand for those donut bunkers that go in the middle of Norman greens.  :P

A big part of me wonders if some architects will intentionally run up costs, charge outrageous fees, quote high prices, etc based solely on the knowledge that thier client has very very deep pockets.

Right Joe,

Thats the implict meaning.  I guess I shouldn't be surprised as Corporate America isn't exactly a shining example of doing the right thing.  In the end though, I wonder if from the perspective of the client the common thinking of "the more money you pay the better quality it is" isn't at play here.

Have we not learned that there isn't a whole lot of reason in anything that Dubai has done in the last 10 years???

Somewhere you'd think the Veblen principle and the idea of point of diminishing return would do battle.

Mr. Norman won't be able to claim "minimalist" or "natural" features on this course!

In the past, Norman's courses would be spec'd with GN turf(s) and the clubhouses would stock GN Wines and GN Apparel.

Maybe there's GN Sand nowadays?

I think the salesman in North Carolina should win an award?  ;) In Irealand we talk about 'selling sand to the arabs' if someone is a good selller but this fella took it as a test  ;D

Using the name "Earth" for this course is laughable.

It's been said that the sand in the desert isn't fine enough to be used in their bunkers, and they only want 'perfect' grains.

Probably he's using that sand to build USGA greens.  ;)

This has probably less to do about golf, than about excess as standard operating procedure in Dubai.

i wonder if Tigers course in North Carolina is getting its sand from Dubai as part of a reciprocal arrangement with Norman's course...
