Chris Buie sent me a couple of larger images of the 1922 Pinehurst map shown in reply #107.  This one shows all of #2 at it existed then...

...and here is the entire map of courses #1 through #4...

Thanks Chris!

Those are fascinating drawings. It appears to be a series of articles, do you know how the author chose those particular courses?

Those are very interesting drawings. In Bob Cosby's essay he was very critical of JH Taylor because of his dislike of central hazards. Based on you drawing he must have gotten over that dislike later in his career. The von Limburger drawing reminds me a little bit of Simpson.

Hawtree fils wrote a piece saying once his father and Taylor hooked up it wasn't the famous name designing the courses!

Fred or Martin or both?

Ed this is an amazing thread and I hope people with better memories than mine will refer us back to it when these courses come up in their own threads.  Congratulations this thread has put GCA back playing to its strength , course history.
Let's make GCA grate again!

Tom, they are all from 'The Evening Telegram - New York' a daily paper that was published between the 1860s and the 1920s (I think it was later merged with the New York World and continued operating for a while).  They ran a series called 'Where New York Plays Golf' that ran between January and April of 1915.  They profiled 20 or so courses. I haven't found a rationale for the series other than the obvious one of these were the courses that were in existence in 1915?  I was hoping to find that they continued the series past 1915 (we were particularly hoping for a contemporaneous layout in 1920 or 1921 for Ardsley) but this is apparently a one-off series (not absolutely confirmed).  Maybe the war got in the way?

I think we need a representative from the backyard design category.  Here is Brett Morrissy's Sunnyside Downs from this thread... http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,43795.msg950489/

I actually saved this one and adjusted the contrast/brightness so it can, hopefully, be seen a little better:

Ed,

I have really enjoyed this thread and thanks for doing it.

The image that Tom Macwood has posted is not his and it is owned by Pine Valley (and a few private others) and should not be posted here.  I am not sure where he has got it from but it should not be posted on here without the permission of those that have ownership of the image.

Just thought I would let you know.

I'd echo Brian's comments, great thread but we should be careful about copyright/permission. With that in mind the plan of Forres in post 131 which you kindly put up, it should be noted that it has been provided courtesy and with permission of the Heritage Centre, Moray Council, Elgin.

Thanks Brian and Niall!  All of the images I have posted on this thread are either already on another thread on this site or were sent to me by other members of this site to post for them.  I don't know where those images originated or if there is a problem.  So if folks will let me know if they see any issues I am happy to make any necessary adjustments.  I have taken down the Pine Valley image but left the link to the other thread where Tom MacWood originally posted it.  Only Tom or the moderators can adjust/delete that image.  I have also revised the Forres reference.  Please let me know if anyone spots anything else.
