Three Ws
« on: January 20, 2010, 08:03:29 AM »
Is anyone able to provide a reference to a comparison of the three W's, or has played the three and would like to comment - Woking, West Hill and Worplesdon?

I have played the first two and have formed an opinion, but never yet managed to get to Worplesdon.

Strange I thought how two clubs in close proximity to each other, that look so similar to the cursory view, could actually be so differnet on closer examination.  I liked West Hill but thought there were a few little tricky things about that would probably just start to annoy me if I had to play it too often, while Woking was rather like a favourite old sweater - a bit tatty but a place that could generate some emotional attachment.

Worp I understand is less heathy??  How does it compare

A lot of people rate Worplesdon as the best of the 3... I liked it a lot... It's just that I like Woking more...

Worplesdon has some really great individual holes and some wonderful old style bunkering schemes from Abercromby...

I think most people are in agreement that West Hill is No.3 from 3... Still, I liked that a lot too... and the par-3 15th is a classic...

I don't think there is much to choose from the three.  I prefer Woking and think it the best W, but it is difficult to say why.  I don't think Woking has anymore really good holes.  Perhaps it just hangs together better.  One aspect I don't like about Worplesdon is crossing the road.   It isn't all bad though because the wonderful #s 12 & 13 are over there - probably the best two holes on the course.  I also thought it Worplesdon was a bit over-treed, but I think like Woking, the club has made an effort to rectify the problem.

I am hoping to play West Hill this winter, but I have been saying that for five winters - heavy sigh.

And 11 Sean... For me, this is the best of all I think... 13 is a wonderful par 3 though... and I like 18 a lot too...
