words of wisdom from the past - another "Who Said It?"
« on: November 01, 2009, 11:49:25 PM »
found this quote in an older golf book tonite..i will let you try to guess who said it:

"At least one designer is apprehensive...[he]worries about the future of design.  "The race for marquee status, he says,  is so intense that the term you hear around golf course design offices these days is "The Look".  The idea is to design something that will make great photographs so that the magazines will publish them.  No one cares if the hole is practical, maintainable, affordable, or enjoyable as long as it is photographable.  The quest for "The Look" has resulted in not only very expensive golf but confused values about what golf is supposed to be all about.""

Jack Nicklaus always gave me credit for "the look" of Sebonack, so I'll guess it was him.

And if it was him, then I will have another comment about the pot calling the kettle black.

Now THAT'S a very interesting comment Paul. Some great courses and holes I've played are very photogenic, others not so much. Sometimes nuance is not easily seen on camera.

I don't know what is more interesting.  Tom D's honest and telling guess at the quote, or who Mr. Hurdzan was referring to in the quote.

Well, it's interesting that Mike Hurdzan said it, too, considering some of the work he and Dana have built in the past 15 years.  Anyone have a picture of the million-dollar first hole at Devil's Pulpit?

Yes, but how many golf course architects have created scenic turnouts on the cart paths like Hurdzan did at Bully Pulpit.

Mike Hurdzan

well done Jeff!

how'd you know??

I remember reading it in the old Golf Course News a decade ago, or so, when he first took Dana Fry in to the fold.  Before that, he and mentor Jack Kidwell were better known for practical courses over flashy ones.  He morphed pretty well!

And, I guess I am taking a break from my stint on the "senior moments" tour, given that I remember it.....

Yep, that's the hole.  They moved a mountain to build that one, I was told.

You were there on a much nicer day than I was.  They told me on a good day you can see the CN Tower in downtown Toronto from that tee; but they day I was there, it was so foggy that I could not see land of any kind!
